I'd look into Kevin Bieksa as a semi-affordable trade option at the deadline or draft -- Canucks have issues. He's cost-controlled, and can be a younger bridge than Boyle.
Then grab Diaz if he makes it to UFA and pair him with his Swiss partner Streit.
Both mobile right shots, neither breaks the bank, a complete makeover of the d-corps without risking another albatross/eggs-in-one-basket scenario. - Tomahawk
I think the Canucks like Bieksa. I don't think they view him as part of the problem. |

Yeah...they just need to understand the size of there football program....no need to rent the Linc....frankly as few people go to the games they could probably rent out a high school field and be ok |

I know. Its all about recruiting though. Being able to tell players they can play at a professional stadium is probably a major selling point. I still think they'd do much better with a 20,000 seat stadium somewhere else. I hate seeing empty stands for every game. |

Long-term, they've got Tanev and Corrado, both right-shots, looking for bigger minutes. Out of their core D, I'm thinking parting with Bieksa would be more palatable than losing Hamhuis/Edler/Garrison. |

Thats a possibility. I'm not sure Bieksa is a great fit though. Flyers really need mobility on the back end.
The best move the Canucks can make is to fire Torts. |

Yeah, and we did just fine with Bruno Gervais in our top 3 at the end of last year. So let's do that every year. - jmatchett383

Like Callahan, I'd be really worried if Girardi is really a Grade A talent, or more a beneficiary of being in a system that was virtually perfect for his skill-set, especially if it's going to cost $$$/+++ to get him. - Tomahawk
I don't think that there is such a thing. A good defenseman such as Girardi can play in any system. While he is not a true #1 because he is not a top point producer or puck mover. He is outstanding in his own end, and can be a secondary point producer. He would instantly be the Flyers best defenseman. And he would substantially improve the blueline. Then the only issue is the cost to acquire the player. |

Speaking of filling roles, this may be overly-optimistic, but aren't they grooming L Schenn to be their Dan Girardi at some point? - Tomahawk

I may be the only one who still believes schenn will develop into a very good shutdown defenseman. |

I'm in, I saw enough late last season and in recent games to think that he will find a level of consistency soon and be a very solid physical shut down guy. |

I think if he can fix his consistency issues, he can be a fine defenseman. I don't think it's an unlikely scenario, either. |

i think he will always just be an average guy with his uses and limits. has a part in any top 6, but isnt necessarily an anchor guy either |

Isn't Coburn a "Girardi" too? I think the pressing need is for puck-movers to compliment the Coburns and Schenns that they already have... seems a grossly inefficient use of cap-space to get preoccupied with Girardi, just because he's likely to be the brightest, shiniest object out there. |

He was very good last year and began to regain that form before the break. If he can find last years level of play again, I will be very satisfied with him. I just hope he finds consistency. It took Coburn a long time to find it. He still has his annual 10-15 game stretch where he looks lost every year |

You just described Dan Girardi, circa-2009, at the age of 26. Schenn's 24? |

i think coburns physical skills have helped him get through a lot of those issues though, whereas schenn isnt so blessed |

Has anyone else heard that St.Louis was demanding a trade after initially being left off the Olympic team, and still wants traded. Heard Lighting and Rangers are talking Callahan+ for St. Louis. |
