No prob bob. You answered kindly and respectful. - twotoekenn
Speaking of Bob, I just noticed that, apart from the pick used on Stolarz, we also got the pick to get Taylor Leier. Anyone know if he's slated to ever crack the NHL full-time? |

His numbers in Switzerland look eerily similar to Streit's at the same age. And he had a terrific start to the lockout season before he had that concussion. Therrien never gave him a chance to get back on track after that. - Tomahawk
I think he's a nice complimentary piece to a third pairing guy like Grossmann/Lauridsen, but I'm not sure about top-4. |

He was in the top-4 in Montreal, riding shotgun to Josh Gorges. |

Did he call it? If he didn't, then he's definitely riding backseat pairing |

By the time our defense gets fixed, offensive styles of play will be the new fad and we will trade away our dmen to keep up.
Always a step behind, we are.

If the plan is to add Diaz and insert him in the top 4, that team is in big trouble. Not an improvement on what is already in the top 4. And I'd give Gustafsson a shot before bringing in Diaz. Not that I'm comfortable with that either. |

But arent we looking to get better in our own zone? And IMO Gus has been very inconsistant, and very injury prone. Not someone I want penciled into our top 4. Maybe on the 3rd pairing.
And dont get me wrong. I like Read, but that is what you will have to give up to get Daley. Think about it another way... If we traded Coburn to a team, what would you expect back? A decent 2 way forward and a pick right? - SchennBros
Too much for Trevor Daley. Read is one of the best two way forwards on the team. No way I trade him for a slightly better Gustafsson |

I never said that Diaz was a turnkey top-4 guy -- I distinctly qualified the assertion that he could be a solid top-4 guy by saying "with continued improvement".
And weren't you the one who insisted that Tom Gilbert couldn't hold Streit's jock during the summer? How did that one work out for you? |

The formula for a winning franchise is to build from the net out. Nashville has Rinne, and has had a pretty stacked blueline for a while now, and they have won a few playoff series in the last decade +. How does Barry Trotz still have a job?
Is Poile blind or something? I don't get it. |

If you want to bring in Diaz to add a young player for the mix and play on the 3rd pair, not a bad idea. But bringing him to play in the top 4, now or in the future, I can't get behind. Rather push Gustafsson. |

Daley is in another class IMO. Gus is on his last chance in the NHL.

Daley is a decent player but is not anything special. Gustafsson needs to be inserted into the lineup and left there, and given an honest chance to solidify himself as an NHL defenseman. |

They tried calling him up, but there was always a giant pilon blocking the back door of the WFC.

I don't disagree. I like Gus, but Daley is far superior at this point. We handle dmen development poorly within the organization. The best thing for Gus is to be traded and given a shot elsewhere.

Gill hasn't played terribly the few times he has been in the lineup. Clutching and grabbing is his game. Amazing Gervais couldn't beat him out. - PLindbergh31
I'd scratch a crap 4th liner and dress gill as #7 and focus him on the PK units. |

Daley is just a Gustafsson that got a real chance. The Flyers have never just let Gustafsson play. They've always yanked him at the first sign of a bad game.
It's why guys like Seidenberg get traded for Petr Nedved & go on to become top 4 guys elsewhere...grass is always greener. The big difference between Daley & Gus is that Berube would be more likely to play Daley, given he'd be a new trade addition & have a bigger salary.
Daley is nothing special. I would be against trading anything of real value for him. Want to trade a 2nd rounder? Fine. Meszaros? Great. But no way I trade Read for him. |

He's 25, about the age where most defensemen are just figuring out where they fit (minus the guys who are int he top-4 at 20 or under). I would HOPE that Gus is given regular minutes for the rest of the season. He'll never be Timonen, but he could be a serviceable 2nd/3rd pairing guy who has good mobility, good puck movement, and a nice shot. There will always be board battles he loses, but I'd hope a good stay-at-home defenseman could help cover some of those losses up.
Plus, Gustafsson costs nothing, Daley will cost assets. |

Daley is 30. Gus is 25 and makes 1/3 of what Daley does. |

I think the best thing is for the Flyers to give Gustaffson a legitimate chance, rather then trade assets for a player that is not the significant upgrade they truly need. |
