perhaps never, 1st ballot hall of famers don't come around often.

Well to clarify, I'm not expecting them to get another HOF player who may be the best defenseman to ever play. But I'm talking about a #1 D man. They're not easy to get.

To be fair, you can probably count the number of dmen as good as Lidstrom throughout history on one hand... as the Flyers can tell you, any franchise is lucky to just have one of those.
- Tomahawk

Pretty much, the only dmen in my lifetime (which is pretty long LOL) that I would rate above Lidstrom would be Orr and maybe Denis Potvin. I would say that Robinson and Bourque would have been on the same level, but that's about it.

Honestly, if I was the Flyers, I'd target Dan Boyle and Anton Stralman in free agency, avoid trading picks and even be a modest seller at the Trade Deadline, sort of like San Jose did last season.

The traded guys like Murray and Clowe, who were going to be UFAs and didn;t really fit anymore or who were expensive and redundant and got picks, then they traded later picks for guys to fill in as rentals(3rd rounder for Torres and a 7th for Scott Hannan)

They managed to win a round and take LA to 7 games in round two...and added a bunch of picks for guys that they were going to lose as free agents anyhow.

I think Scott Niedermayer is a rightful Hockey Hall of Famer.

Those other guys BiggE mentioned were a level above that.

I'd be fine with this.

Hell, I'd be fine if they did this and missed the playoffs this year.

I'm still going to watch/root/go to game, but as currently constituted, this team is 1st round playoff fodder, at best.

I think, with the right matchup, they could steal a round, but I have serious doubt they'd make an ECF appearance with the current roster.

Because he'd be an upgrade on what currently is on the roster?

The problem is, he's going to cost far more than he is worth.

Yeah, Bourque, Lidstrom and Potvin were 1000pt players who also did all the little things that dmen were supposed to do perfectly. IMO, Potvin was the best of the best.

I have Orr more in the running for best player ever, versus best dman ever, if that makes any sense. I just think the guys above were a bit more solid in all areas.

If they could swap Timonen for, say a 1st rounder and a decent prospect, then land a Ron Hainsey for a 2nd, I'd be all for it.

Yeah, the cost/benefit is really really iffy on him. Not sure he'd be getting the same kind of usage numbers on any team other than the Isles, who have literally nobody behind their 1st-pairing worth mentioning with Lubo out.

Not bad ideas. I would rather just pay the price for Girardi. I think the problem is that its better off keeping guys like Mez and Downie rather then trading them for late round picks. I know this team has problems, but to make the team worse while they're in the thick of the playoff hunt, would be stupid. As unlikely as it seems, this team and any team has a chance once they make the playoffs. They have a star center and legit goalie. Maybe they both get hot and the team rides them in the playoffs.

I don't believe Timonen would wave his NTC if the team were in contention.

Timonen for a first and a decent prospect would be too good to pass up. That kind of deal would signify the team giving up on this season though.

He's not bad, ceratinly more mobile than most of the guys the Flyers currently have, but...Isles are going to want a significant return

Does anyone think they are going to stand pat in regards to defense? I mean next year we already have:

L.Schenn
Streit
Coburn
Grossmann
Gustoffsen
And then one of our Minor prospects making the team...

Granted, its not a great line-up, but I think at this point, if your going to add a defenseman like MacDonald, or Hainsey, or Dailey then one of the above guys would also have to go...

Like Callahan, I'd be really worried if Girardi is really a Grade A talent, or more a beneficiary of being in a system that was virtually perfect for his skill-set, especially if it's going to cost $$$/+++ to get him.

Those are all valid points. I don't like giving up on the season, but the Sharks made similar moves and won a round and took LA to seven. Sounds counter intuitive, but they were smart about identifying who was going, and by getting stop gaps who could do what they provided.
