Timonen for a first and a decent prospect would be too good to pass up. That kind of deal would signify the team giving up on this season though. - PhillySportsGuy
Not if they twisted it as an attempt to add cap space for someone like Buff. |

Like Callahan, I'd be really worried if Girardi is really a Grade A talent, or more a beneficiary of being in a system that was virtually perfect for his skill-set, especially if it's going to cost $$$/+++ to get him. - Tomahawk
I guess I have more confidence in him than you. I don't see him as an elite defenseman, but I do like him. He's not very gifted offensively, but he's a very solid defender. |

which is why we should trade timonen - 2Real
That SJ team had the depth to do that. The Flyers do not. Those trades would be akin to us trading Downie and (an expiring) Grossmann. |

Thats an interesting thought. Im not a huge Byfuglien guy, but trading Kimmo to acquire assets would help offset the assets given up for a better defenseman. It wouldn't be an even deal, but it would keep the team from losing significant youth. |

I'm totally serious -- I am flat-out terrified that the Flyers are going to be in on him on Day 1. I've never been as afraid of what a player will look like, ever -- and I mean EVER -- as what Ryan Callahan will look like in Years 5, 6 and 7 |

He's going to command a significant salary as a UFA and he's also going to cost a lot in trade. I like him, think he's good, but he's not going to fill the biggest need the Flyers have.

It'd still be worth it to me. The Sharks also added Torres and Hannan for far less than they got for Clowe & Murray. |

It was also the perfect storm. We have all been saying that we would trade guys like Downie, Mez or Kimmo if someone gave us a very strong offer. The Sharks got those strong offers.
I doubt they were ready to dump Clowe and Murray for a mid-late round pick. |

Not for the money/term (7 years, $7M) he's gonna want. |

I agree with everything you said, only that he's about to get paid like an elite defenseman. Like Jsaq, I might lean toward using all that $ to bring in a less-coveted option and use the difference to fill other needs or to further bolster the blueline. |

I wouldn't trade for him. I'm talking about FA. |

They don't need Ryan Callahan. I would be shocked if the Flyers showed any serious interest. Im sure they will kick the tires as they always do, but that is about it.

Yes. But remember, Clowe had 0 goals on the season, and Murray, well, he's pretty bad. They could get by without. Us losing Timonen is waving a white flag.
Now, for a ridiculous offer, (1st+legit prospect) I'd listen. |

Boyle could very well get as much as Girardi AAV. I just feel he's a safe pick even if they need to overpay. The cap keeps going up, so overpayments don't look as bad after a couple of years. Look at Carle. No one wanted to touch him with his current salary. Now, several teams would be interested in having him. |

Speaking of filling roles, this may be overly-optimistic, but aren't they grooming L Schenn to be their Dan Girardi at some point? |

If Callahan makes it to UFA, I would think there would be a mountain of Pegula-money waiting for him... with the Upstate ties, and the Sabres looking to move Ott, and all.
Edit: I was more scared of them signing Clarkson. Callahan is actually a good player at the end of the day. |
