You're talking about a team who generally targeted forwards in the early rounds and preferred trading 1sts for rentals. In the past few years they've stopped that, and are trying to hold onto their young defensemen. There's a very good chance that 2 of Morin, Hagg, Ghost, and Alt can crack the top-4 in 2-3 years. - jmatchett383
I was just showing how bad they are at drafting dmen. 20 years of drafting dmen and the best they did was pitkanen/Seidenberg.
Infer what you like from what I said. I have 0 faith in the flyers drafting of dmen. |

no....but thats not Schenn's fault.....he is a 5-6 guy at this point in his career....he has some big holes in his game that get exposed when he plays big minutes.....10-12 ...he seems ok....this is his 6th year in the league, and may be a classic case of a kid that was rushed to quickly to the show....is there room for improvement...sure, but his ceiling is not much different then what you see today.
JVR scored a pair the other night and now has 26....he has figured out how to succeed at this level....he has been great in tight to the goalie on pp this year, his hands are sick (as the kids say). he has played top minutes on the Leafs top line with Kessel and Bozak and deserves every minute he gets. The Leafs haven't tried to make him something he is not.
this trade was a FLEECING. - landros 2
I'd really like to see a stats guy get the lines for when L. Schenn is partnered with Meszaros or Streit v. any other partner.
L. Schenn was arguably our best defenseman last season (paired with Timonen). He looked solid in the stretch before the Olympic break while paired with Gustafsson. In short--from what I've seen with Schenn's play--he looks pretty good when he's not paired with a fourth forward (Meszaros or Streit).

Hagg is more of a long shot. Gus is better than Hagg and he can't even get into the lineup with this crap d. |

a lot of people do though. I bet if you ask a casual Flyers fan about Morin, they won't know much. They'll base it off what they read on CSNPhilly. |

I don't think the Flyers will do anything big before Wednesday's deadline -- I really don't.
Holmgren is like many GMs in that he doesn't like the prices at this time of year. He doesn't mind doing stuff around the margins, like a Kent Huskins for a conditional pick, or taking a flyer on Steve Mason -- a guy he always liked -- for a conditional fourth.
But his history shows that Holmgren does his big stuff, for better or worse, on and before Draft Day and leading up to free agency. It's pretty clear, when you look back, that that's how he does it.
Certainly, things can change. Things can always change. But just looking back at how Holmgren does business...the roster we see today just might look the same at 3:01 p.m. on Wednesday.
I don't think that's good or bad -- they're in a playoff spot now, and prices are ridiculous for some of these players. Might as well ride it out and see if Baby Schenn, Couturier and Vinny can close out this year really strong and see what you have to do in the offseason to take the next step. - AllInForFlyers

Barring a trade, does Heeter get a start? They've got that rough Pens/Pens/Hawks stretch of 3 games in 4 nights, and Mason probably won't be able to lift his arms if he plays both Pens games. - jmatchett383
Man, no idea. You're right, Mason can't play 'em all, but I somehow doubt they want to throw Heeter in there, although if Emery's little "tweak" turns out to be more serious than it seems, what options are there? Trade one of our few expendable assets on a goalie?

Valid points!
Schenn has turned it around, his positioning has been better, & he rarely makes a bad first pass on the breakout.
He's been quietly efficient & effective.

I know thats not what your saying, but again when Panotch brings up rumors of the Flyers possibly obtaining Weber at the draft and the conspiracy machine in flyers fans heads start turning...well, its being reported and the drafts in philly, so I really think its gonna happen...I have to much respect for you by speaking hockey with you to think you feel this way just talking about flyers fans as a whole |

I think the debacles with Pavel Kubina and Kris Versteeg have soured Holmgren on Trade Deadline activity -- they got absolutely nothing from those two guys, and to my recollection -- and my memory could be faulty -- Holmgren hasn't burned a second-rounder or higher since.

Lucky for the Sabres, Edmonton is showing the rest of the league how not to rebuild a franchise with top pick after top pick. There definitely has to be a blend of the right players. I wouldn't think it would make sense to go after Callahan, unless it's just to appease the fanbase. 1 more bad season, then you guys start to climb. I can't wait to see Zado and Risto playing, but I'm sure I'll hate it as well... - wolfhounds
I at first hated that draft. Taking 2 d-men when the obvious need is forward.
I now love it. Zadorov has found an offensive game that is surprising everyone.
Risto should be up in Buffalo next year. he is progressing faster then people thought he would be.

I think the beats are mostly saddled with having to keep the narratives simple and in the vein of 'Flyers hockey'... on one hand, they're idiots, on the other, they kind of have a thankless job. You have to give Pinocchio credit for having the stones to ask some of the tougher questions lobbed at the brass and players, though. |
