I don't see it either, but I'd be in that sell veteran mode (Downie, Grossmann, Hartnell and Timonen). If its a reasonable deal, I'd have no issue being sellers at this deadline. - flyer_nutter
If they can get a 5th round pick for Downie get it done. He's been a trainwreck. |

Picture Zdeno Chara, but without as much offense. Would you be happy if Morin turns out to be that player? - MJL
Yes... but if Chara didn't have the all-around game, he wouldn't be getting 25-30mins a night.
Days of Hatcher, Foote are over. It's not a coincidence as they started tightening up the rules, guys like Komisarek, Volchenkov, and Regehr started to lose their relevance.
Guys like Vlasic and Hamhuis are the new shutdown dman. |

I would in a heartbeat. Deal the vets, and also give the younger kids in the AHL a bit of a look.
I would rather they take another step toward a proper rebuild of that back end with more assets, instead of praying on a fools chance to win the cup. Build a team that can establish itself as elite for a few years. Instead of one that relies so heavily on hot streaks. |

Chara also didn't hit a point that he really contributed offensively until his 6th season.
I have hope for Morin but for him right now it's a work in progress, people just need a target & because they didn't take some others he's it. |

I hear you point and kinda agree with you, but you cant give up on a playoff year. Sends a terrible message to your team and fanbase |

Guys like Komisarek lost his relevance because his level of play dropped off. You don't have to a be a big point producer and a PP defenseman to have a good all around game. If you can play a dominant defensive game as Chara can, and can handle the puck and make a good first pass, then your going to be a high minute player on the team. And I disagree that top defensive defenseman have lost their relevance. NHL GM's and Coaches still know that defense is just as important. And that being able to defend in your own end. A player doesn't have to get 25-30 minutes a game to be a key player.
But mainly my point is that if Morin turns out to be a physical force on the back end defensively, but unfortunately isn't racking up the points or putting up corsi numbers that make the advanced stats nuts all happy, doesn't mean he's not going to be a very good player, and a key player to the future of this team.

It makes sense they have 3 decent prospects at that spot but none ready to handle that role right away.
But they really could use wingers, based on their prospect list. |

I'd like to read what the definition of a proper rebuild is. Both can be done. They don't need a fire sale and dump veteran players to do a proper rebuild. Giving up on the current Season would be stupid.

Why dont we all wait and see how he develops before we decide if he is going to a bust on this team....he's a project with tremendous upside and lets leave it at that for now |

Know who Morin reminds me of? Or kind of what I see from him in the future? A younger version of Chris Phillips. - flyer_nutter
An interesting comparison. I'm not sure Phillips showed quite the physical nastiness, borderline over aggressiveness of Morin. However, I would take a 15 year career from a first round draft pick. I like the overall mix of three guys in the system right now. They all offer something unique that the other two, don't necessarily show, which is very encouraging.

It was a joke. Want no part of Kesler. He's better than B. Schenn right now, but he's also older, and injury prone. Getting Kesler makes no sense for the Flyers. |

Exactly.
Morin's gonna have to be able to move the puck at the NHL level, to not be a black hole in the possession game, to even have a chance to take advantage of his defensive skill set.
If he can be 6'6 Hamhuis/Vlasic, I'd be over the moon with the pick. But it's important to note that while those guys are more defensive-minded today, they had enough puck-skill and smarts to be all-out offensive dynamos as post-draft teens. Morin's shown solid improvement in all areas, but his ceiling as a possession-contributor is still suspect, therefor his viability as an NHL contributor is still suspect as well. |
