You are wrong. Gillis identified a group of players that met a specific need the Canucks had, namely toughness, for the playoffs. He knew they would be pushed around with Hodgson as their 3rd line center. The kid is not a good skater and doesn't add the element of toughness we needed on our 3rd line at the time.

So Gillis rushed a trade by not advertising that Hodgson wanted out??? He limited his choices because some teams who didn't have the assets he wanted weren't notified that he was available? Who (frank)ing cares? That isn't limiting his options, it's identifying what he wants and going after it.

You're letting your hatred of Gillis blind you on the details. You don't have to like Kassian, but when he Gillis acquired him all he said was that he was the type of player they wanted, he was physical which you need in the Western Conference playoffs, that "he still has a ways to go to develop I think into his full potential, but he is a NHL player now who is going to help us in a lot of different ways."

If that indeed is the deal, other than what happens with the first pick, it seems the centerpiece (or at least the part which can instantly become a roster player) would be Sutter.

To that end, I believe he's thus far been primarily used in a more defensive role (and looks to be very responsible in both ends) with both the Hurricanes but even more so with Pittsburgh.

He is still young (25) and is a decent skater, has good hockey sense (and excellent pedigree), and does have offensive skills (he's actually put up fairly respectable levels for a guy that has that sort of limited role - I'm not sure if he has ever been given any sort of lengthy offensive role to be explored properly - anybody have background on his 20 goal campaign in 2010? and what sort of line-up/ice-time situation he had there? Perhaps giving him an extended look on a goal-scoring line would make a significant impact on the offensive side of things? (and make at least a few people - myself included- back away from the ledge)
