Maybe they didn't claim him because they are going to trade picks for a roster player.

Seems like a blown chance to me.

Call me crazy, but I still think Scott Gomez increases the Hockey IQ of the fourth line of the Flyers immensely

He can't score anymore, but from what I read, he still plays hard and backchecks, does the little things, doesn't take stupid penalties

I think people who talk about Couts speed being an issue are high on meth.

If Kesler stays healthy (the big if) he can win a series all by himself. I think he's a good fit in Philly. He'll do anything to win. But he's an a**hole of the highest order. He's definitely a problem in the locker room here.
- tgropen

I remember when RJ Umberger was here and we submitted that offer sheet for Kesler that he wasnt happy cause he said he was a giant a hole...They played together in college at I believe Ohio St

Just because he won a Selke doesnt mean he is better now. The big advantage he has is that he is better at the dot. I agree that he is the more accomplished player, and better two way player.. but defensively idk.
- jak521

Its debatable, but Kesler is definitely the better play right now. I just don't know how long he will be better than Schenn and Couturier. I'd give it maybe 2-3 years.

Kesler won a Selke. I think he's better than Couts in almost every area. I just don't see him being better than Couts for too many more years.
- PhillySportsGuy

Any trade that involves Kesler for Couturier is a trade for you guys to win it all in the next three years, max. But to be honest, with Shero and Holmgren involved the level of posturing is off the charts. The deadline may come and go with nothing happening. Of course, out here on the Left Coast we sincerely hope one of them hits the panic button and makes a massive mistake

When you're an a-hole, you can only last so long in one place. If you stop producing, you won't last long in the league at all.

It's not an issue. I tried to say that his speed will keep him from becoming an elite player.

You guys really can't handle any criticism of our guys at all. It's really sad.

I love him as a player. The problem we all have is his position and the current situation of the team. They are not contenders with their current defense and they have several good, young centers. Why would they trade a center about to enter his prime for a center about to leave his prime when the team isn't good enough to win a cup?
- PhillySportsGuy

That is an excellent question.

I wouldn't be surprised if Vancouver is just using the Flyers to drive up the price. Homer doesn't even care because he knows it is impacting the Pens. I bet they both know they aren't going to get a deal done.

The Pens need to take it seriously because they know the Flyers are in on every top player available.

I would say it was a combo of the dman taking a bad line to the puck, a good pass by Read, and speed Coots build up on the rush.

Either way, I would agree with MJL in that I dont think speed or skating is really a problem with Coots. He is not Pavel Bure, but neither is he Mike Knuble.

I don't think there is anyone that thinks that Couturier is going to be an elite player. Talk about going to extremes. What is said about Couturier is that he's going to be one of the top 2 way forwards in the NHL. And is a player that you win with. And his skating is not going to stop him from becoming that player. This kid has special instincts andhockey sense.

Florida closing in on a trade involving d-man Mike Weaver. Canadiens are among teams with interest in Weaver. Draft pick likely return.

Right-handed guy, really good PK'er and generally underrated. He's Conacher-sized, though.

Never said skating was a problem.

As always, people misinterpret a post and fill in the blanks on their own.

I'm sorry guys... I will no longer ever talk critically of one of ours until you guys approve of it first.

I think the criticism is of your statement that unless you have elite speed you can't be an elite player.
