Gardiner does not have top pairing potential. Mez did at one point. Gardiner can't defend. There is no way he can ever play top pairing minutes.

Grossman is far more then a 6/7 defenseman. He's a top 4 defensive defenseman.
- MJL

perhaps for some defensively-weak teams, but he has "3rd pairing" written all over him for most teams in this league.

What can the Flyers get for Downie? Anything?
- jstross

I think they could probably get a 3rd rounder for him or so.

You see potential as goals. This guy will score more goals so he had more potential.

Would you rather have Dan Girardi or Keith Yandle? Ryan McDonagh or Byfuglien?

- PhillySportsGuy

How annoying. You assume you have a better understanding of potential because you believe Luke Freaking Schenn has more potential than Gardiner?

Leave. Right now.

I stand by that! Gardiner does not have top pairing potential. He will never be good enough defensively.

Maybe in a couple of years. Guy has been playing in the ahl and doing fairly well offensive wise. He would have cracked the flyers roster no problem.just watch the tape. In my opinion Phoenix got fleeced
- PhillaBully

He better be doing well in the AHL with this super skillset the player has. I've never seen the player play a single second. How many games have you seen Runblad play? I have no idea if he's ready for a full time NHL role.

What makes it questionable. He's played a top 4 role on two different NHL teams.
- MJL

I don't remember how good the Dallas D was, but his playing a top 4 role on the Flyers is only because the Flyers D is so weak.

I think Girardi and Yandle are fairly even and would depend on the mix the team already has.

If I was starting a defense and I had Yandle or Girardi to choose from, I would take Girardi.

- PhillySportsGuy

I would agree about Girardi and Yandle. I feel like I would lean to Yandle though. Not sure completely why. Just would.

Most teams? Like how many out of 30?

I would say that "most" teams, that is the majority, would have Grossmann on a 3rd pairing.

He looks a bit better on the Flyers because the Flyers simply aren't that good on D.

I see potential as the pairing a certain player can play on. I think Schenn and Gardiner can both be 2nd pairing players. I just trust Schenn to reach that level more than Gardiner.

Can we just agree that Grossmann is a limited 4-6 defenseman, like most of the rest of the Flyers D corps and move on?

Yes. But only if you mean 4-6 on the Phantoms.

Grossman averages 20 minutes a game.

Schenn averages 16.

Nope. My issue with Grossmann isn't that he's not a NHL level guy.
