Ryan Callahan's original ask of 8 years at $7.5 late last summer should be marked as the starting point for his New York departure.

YOU THINK?!?!?!

Wow. Some disagree with me about contract negotiation tactics, and that's totally fine -- I realize that some have been trained differently.

But that's exactly what I was talking about: You can piss people off when you come in with a ridiculous offer. I've seen it happen -- I've literally been in a meeting where the "ask" came, there was dead silence, and a senior executive finally said, "Were you serious?"

That meeting was over 10 minutes later.

Suddenly your top-six can actually move the puck from top to bottom adequately.

I know. I really hope MacDonald fits right in and feels comfortable in the 2nd/3rd pairing. Must be mentally and physically draining to be the #1 dman on a terrible defensive team.

Really like Ryan Callahan, but that contract would have been an overpayment of epic proportions.

I would be satisfied with getting rid of both Mez and Grossmann in one trade!

I read a story a while back about how the players who are benefiting from the way things are in the cap era arent the big name guys they are getting the same money as before its the mid level guys who are making considerable more

Cap hit with a slight decrease. Prob. $2.5M-$3M. Stepan and Kadri are comps.

San Jose has flat stated they won't take limited guys like Grossmann. They're fully embracing analytics and skating.

Yea. I negotiate contracts and people always want to go in and offer a ridiculously low amount with the idea that "All they can do is say no and counter. We might as well just do it."

They don't realize that the offer can be insulting and result in the other party unwilling to negotiate in good faith. They'd rather wait for someone else or really play hardball with you.

I think thats what happened with Callahan. Rangers got pissed about him asking for so much. They didn't feel like dealing with his poop. (Allegedly quibbling over $500k per year?)

They do take some chances. I'm sure their scouts just didn't like those guys.

Unless you were part of USDP, Team Canada U-20, or a former first-round pick, the Flyers are much less likely to notice you.

Exactly -- I read multiple stories that said the players knew they were getting locked out mere minutes into that meeting.

I dislike schenn so I undervalued him. You like him, so you overvalued him. He's probably somewhere in the middle.
- Flyersgod

Fair enough, but the difference this year is 5 more goals for Kesler with both having 18 assists...kesler has 5 years more experience, so I see the upside to B Schenn vice the top end of Kesler which we can see how...So my feeling is don't trade B Schenn unless it is something big the team needs...so you don't include B Schenn for Kesler as the they are almost the same player today and B Schenn still has growing to do and may have more upside longterm.

My sister the doctor, who is not a fast reader, has devoted a lot of time to reading the whole series and gets really heated up over the fact that "he doesn't take very good care of himself and I'm afraid he's going to die before he finishes." Cracks me up.

HBO supposedly already has the rest of the story in hand, in case he croaks. Supposedly, it's possible the show could move ahead of the books at some point.
