Can you explain the cap advantage of having him start in the AHL?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it isn't obvious to me.

- Marc D

Because the Flyers are going to want to carry Pronger on the opening roster coming out of training camp, to maximize LTIR. So looking at that roster, they are at $70,518,292 without Pronger. Add Pronger to that, and they are at 75,459,721. So they somehow need to lose 4,359,721 to be Cap compliant coming out of training camp with Pronger on the active roster and not on LTIR.

So hypothetically trading Grossmann and starting Laughton off in the AHL, removes $4,394,000 from the Flyers Cap, which makes them Cap compliant coming out of camp. Day of the opening game, Pronger is placed on LTIR, Laughton is recalled and in the lineup on opening night.

Only thing they have to do is finagle a 7th defenseman.

So if Mez resigns with Boston before the draft the Flyers get a 3rd if he signs after the draft a 4th. goes to FA deals stands. I like it.

I forget the exact number of games but after playing X amount of games in the Ahl he will have a lower cap hit when he's called up.

There is no set number of games. If he spends one day in the AHL, let alone a game, the cap charge to the Flyers is lower. Cap accounting is done on a daily basis, not on a per game basis.

what about them

A 2nd for MacDonald is a joke.

Meszaros is skilled player, he's going to be a difference maker in the playoffs. Prob score the cup winning GWG or something.

Vanek went for a 2nd... Matt Moulson went cheap! Homer where were you on those!? oh thats right chasing another center because we really need another one.

Goalies traded yet we cant land a backup? What happens when we make a run in the playoffs and Mason gets injured?

Yes we have cap space, thats great, but a legit winger like Vanek and Moulson should have been grabbed this deadline.

A 2nd for a solid top 4 defenseman like MacDonald is a steal. And he is a far better defenseman then Meszaros is. And the Flyers have Ray Emery as a backup.

Since when is he a top 4 defenceman?

And Emery is always injured when he is on our team. The last time he had groin issues it was caused by a necrotic hip.

Since when is he not? He's been playing 25 minutes a game for the Isles. He is a legitimate top 4 NHL defenseman.

If the Flyers thought that Emery was going to be out long term, they would've added someone.

The demand for that "top 4" d-man was outrageous. If the Islanders held on to A-Mac a day longer, a team realistically could have paid more.

Now that the deadline is over, and you can completely analyze the deals - the Flyers made out very well. They picked up a solid d-man with above-average mobility, and have a decent shot at having two 2nd-round picks in the upcoming Philadelphia draft. Not to mention the cap savings. It's a great position to be in heading into the offseason.

Vanek went for so little because it's widely understood that he is signing with the Wild as a UFA this summer. The Isles threw a HUGE deal at him and he didn't take it. Macdonald for the 2nd and 3rd makes sense because they are going to look to re-sign him and build around him.

Moulson is going to command a big contract and the Flyers really cant afford to take that on. Certainly not for a another forward.

Just as an example, this years Season is 195 days. So a player with a $4M cap hit, costs $20,512.82 a day to carry on the Cap. So hypothetically, every day that the players spends in the AHL, his cap charge will be $20,512.82 lower.

I'm sure this was posted before, but in case anyone isn't sure, the conditions on the Mez trade (per Ty, the Bruins blogger):

Though Meszaros’ initial cost is a third round pick, there are conditions to the trade, and boy are they complex. The 2014 third rounder becomes a 2014 second rounder if the B’s advance to the Eastern Conference Finals and if the 6-foot-2 Meszaros plays in two-thirds of the Bruins’ playoff contests. If re-signed by Boston, it can become even more complex. If re-signed before the draft, the Flyers get a second round pick. If re-signed after the draft, Philly gets an additional fourth round pick.

Vanek is an ELITE scoring winger.

Yes he will be costly to sign but we have the cap space, and there wont be a better player available this offseason.

Lets put it this way, would you rather have Hartnell or Vanek on your top line ?

They don't have the Cap space to sign Vanek and make the moves they need to make on defense. And the reason the Isles got so little for Vanek, is because he won't sign with a team, and wants to test free agency. And all indications are that he wants to play with the Wild.

I'd like to see him get a chance. Although as a 7 it wont benefit him so much as playing regularly for the phantoms. All things considered he could be a good option.
