So according to TSN the NHL is now forgiving the NJ Devils and removing the $$ fines from the Kovalchuck cap-circumventing contract and also changing the ruling on their pick from having to forfeit a 1st rounder to having it moved to 30th overall...
So does that mean they're going to now lessen the cap recapture penalties on Lou's contract?
Seems kind of BS that one "illegal contract" gets forgiven yet another is still being punished.
I guess the fact that Kovalchuk fled to the KHL is a factor.
Still, another sketchy proceeding in an already crooked set of rule changes... - Fosco
We're not being punished yet. Chicago may be the first to fight this, I think Hossa will retire early, his marshmallow body is coming to an end. |

More baffled than pissed. I'm pretty sure this was the offer:Ottawa's first, the higher second rounder, Rickard Rackel and Sami Vatanen. Murray might have thrown in the other first instead of the second but that I don't know. Was that enough? - duxcup07
I don't mind that deal, personally.
I would have preferred something a bit more high end than Rackel alone as the forward.
That's a tough one, but far better than any of the proposed PIT deals.
I can understand why ANH would be pissed if they thought there was an offer agreed upon... |

Yeah, I've heard more than one pundit claim that teams will have lawyers on this as soon as it actually becomes an issue... |

I don't think the Canucks were fined were they? Wonder if they were threatened with litigation and backed down. Bunch of BS. |

Can't remember. But the NJD are getting more than their money returned.
The Canucks will be punished in cap-space, though.
If you give one team a break on a cap-circumventing contract, I don't see why the others should still receive full punishment, even if those punishments are different.
Especially if the "cap-circumventing" contract was deemed totally legal when signed.
Like I said, Kovalchuck fleeing for the KHL is likely a factor, but still...
Pretty sketchy proceedings... |

Doesn't matter; Kovalchuk "retired" from the NHL. This sets a precedent and will be brought up time and time again when it becomes an issue. CHI and DET will probably go through this long before it becomes an issue with Luongo. |

And most importantly thanks to the readers! There are so many great readers that give this site its character. And to those of you who can afford to help out and buy a season ticket here and there, while not required, is SO very helpful in enabling us to keep this site alive.
Makes me want to get season tickets now. |

Jaekel's latest blog is interesting, too.
Apparently a deal with CHI was close, but CHI couldn't clear the cap space.
At least that's what I got from skimming the blog... |

Would Absolutly love that deal, if waiting for the draft holds those kinds of returns it will be well worth it. |

Quotes from the blog:
"What never really got reported was how close the Hawks came to landing the prize of draft day rumors—Vancouver center Ryan Kesler. Nor that there is apparently a possible deal “in place” for around draft day, involving Nick Leddy, possibly Andrew Shaw and, yes, top Hawk prospect, Teuvo Teravainen."
The key is that Kane wants Kesler and they need to resign Kane.
Not trading kesler for the poop offers yesterday was good. Just need to keep losing and make some deals at the draft. What really worries me is all the D not wanting to Leave. Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Garrison....
Edit: In the comments blogger said would probably involve more than Kesler coming back. |

Edler was quoted as saying you don't sign a 6 year extension with a NTC just to leave when it kicks in.
My list:
Torts
Kes
Gillis
Edler |

How about Kane goes UFA and comes to Vancouver to play with Kesler.

If this is true, this is another missed opportunity for the Canucks. Leddy could have taken Edler's spot and Edler could have been traded before his NTC kicked in. |

Not sure if I could find the source now but Gillis was saying you don't sign a player to a 6 year extension and then trade him just before the NTC kicks in. Seemed to indicate he wouldn't trade Edler at the draft partly due to this. |
