Quotes from the blog:
"What never really got reported was how close the Hawks came to landing the prize of draft day rumors—Vancouver center Ryan Kesler. Nor that there is apparently a possible deal “in place” for around draft day, involving Nick Leddy, possibly Andrew Shaw and, yes, top Hawk prospect, Teuvo Teravainen."
The key is that Kane wants Kesler and they need to resign Kane.
Not trading kesler for the poop offers yesterday was good. Just need to keep losing and make some deals at the draft. What really worries me is all the D not wanting to Leave. Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Garrison....
Edit: In the comments blogger said would probably involve more than Kesler coming back. - 89_hockey
Yeah, I just skimmed the blog but didn't read the comments.
Terravainen (sp?) is the most valuable single piece in all the packages I've seen.
But I'd want him, a 1st, plus another valuable roster player or relatively high-end prospect included for Kesler alone.
No way I'd add anything significant to Kesler unless the offer was better. |

Edler was quoted as saying you don't sign a 6 year extension with a NTC just to leave when it kicks in.
My list:
Torts
Kes
Gillis
Edler - 89_hockey
You also don't just sign a 6 year deal and then start playing like crap! |

So according to TSN the NHL is now forgiving the NJ Devils and removing the $$ fines from the Kovalchuck cap-circumventing contract and also changing the ruling on their pick from having to forfeit a 1st rounder to having it moved to 30th overall...
So does that mean they're going to now lessen the cap recapture penalties on Lou's contract?
Seems kind of BS that one "illegal contract" gets forgiven yet another is still being punished.
I guess the fact that Kovalchuk fled to the KHL is a factor.
Still, another sketchy proceeding in an already crooked set of rule changes... - Fosco
Just another example of the old boys club....

Not sure if I could find the source now but Gillis was saying you don't sign a player to a 6 year extension and then trade him just before the NTC kicks in. Seemed to indicate he wouldn't trade Edler at the draft partly due to this. - 89_hockey
No, Gillis should sign all these players to big contracts with NTC's and just wait until the player requests a trade, give Gillis 2-4 teams to work with and really handcuff the franchise. |

or gillis could try to wheel and deal like a normal gm only to have the owner bend him over like a little female dog |

Yep, don't know why people think Edler wants to leave after just signing that contract.
It is just as likely Hamhuis wants to go to Edmonton and there is nothing to suggest he would.
So I like Tanev and Stanton, they have been great but if team/gm signs 4 dmen to contracts with ntc's are you not saying these 4 guys are your core?
What has to be determined is if they can afford Tanev at w/e salary he will be demanding next year. If they cant afford to pay Tanev in the 3mil range, they should have moved him at the tdl.
It is nice that some of these prospects and waiver wire pickups are playing well and increasing their value but if the budget isn't there on d to sign these young guys to extensions, then you have to deal them for some forward prospects where the need is... you can't wait until the summer to trade if they are rfa. You don't want to deal with offer sheets from other teams or some low ball offers because time has run out. |

Edler is not suddenly terrible. Anyone with eyes can see Edler + Bieksa or Edler + Garrison is an absolute train wreck. The best he has played recently was with Diaz ( ), Tanev and I thought he was decent with Corrado.
He played over OEL in the Olympics and looked good too. His play has suffered because they paired him with the wrong players... |

This management group/team philosophy is stupid. I am not sure how much is b/c of ownership meddling but the results are lacking.
You talk about team chemistry or at least with the pairings and everyone can see it is important but then they bring in a defensive minded coach and to some extent a meat and potatoes approach to the game that doesn't necessarily fit all/many of the players on this roster and maybe the grind of the west coast travel isn't helping either.
Torts has to roll the lines more. Just thinking about the sportsnet segment a few nights ago when Valk was saying how much players just wanted icetime and Kesler with the highest toi for forwards had to be loving it... he still wants out. |
