I agree with the common sentiment that a 2nd for a UFA goalie with 29 games of NHL experience seems absurd. It means they absolutely have to resign him, imo, which also means they might have to overpay to do so. I also remember last trade deadline the Flames talking this guy up like he was the get of the deadline by any team, so who knows. Just connecting dots here a bit, If Varly and Berra are the goalies next year and for probably the next 3 years or so if things work out, and the team seems to prefer the Fin over Pickard, would seem Pickard becomes trade bait in the offseason, probably part of a package for (insert dman here?).
I disagree with Rundblad being labeled a bottom pairing guy already, whoever said that. He's still young and was buried in an organization with like 15 NHL quality dmen. I can easily see him being a top 4 in chicago next year with the right opportunity. I think a 2nd for a filer on Rundblad would have been better than Berra, with moving a 4th or something for one of the other goalies available if we really needed a goalie.
Corbett has already set Edmonton Oil Kings records for goals and points by a dman this season, I've seen him play and I think it was well worth grabbing him on an ELC and seeing what happens. Nice to see the Avs dip into the juniors overage UFA market for once. I was BEGGING them to sign Tyler Johnson a couple years ago in his 20yo season. |

As far as Stastny goes, it really makes me nervous letting him get so close to free agency when he's going to be far and away the best center available this offseason. Even if he prefers the Avs, is bff with duchene etc, enjoys the winning and wants to continue to be apart of it, its hard when you get that close to not just see what else is out there. Just ask Vanek, he wasn't opposed to signing with NYI, but curiosity killed the cat and he now wants the UFA experience since he's so close. All it takes is one dumb/desperate/brian burke team with a need for a center to drop a 7/50 offer and poop on the Avs plans.
He's hoping Joe Sakic is just too hard to say no to... |

Now it is time to see what Giguere is made of. He has looked pretty iffy in too many games. I like that we now have a viable option, with a little work from Allaire if Giggy isn't up to snuff.
Looks like we overpaid a bit given what other goalies were going for but I have no problem having faith in what Allaire and Roy see in Berra (assuming they had a lot to do with choosing a keeper). |

I assume they had a lot to do with that trade, Roy must of wanted him and Allaire knew enough about him from working with him at camps over in switzerland that he can work with him.
I am ok with payign the 2nd for him and resigning him, not jacked about it, but ok. Just looking at available goalies next season as a back up. The best that are available:
Elliott, Labarbera ,MacDonald, Emery, Montoya, Gustavsson, Berra. Other UFA goalies are starters or are good enough for a 1A 1B situation, however this is Varlys net, he needs a true back up.
If the flames were planning on resigning Berra too, really poopy list of back ups, might as well trade for the 1 you want now and sign him. |

Runblad never came close to developing the way he was supposed to. He had plenty of chances now but he is looking like a bust. If you think he couldnt crack PHO defensive depth chart but that he can break into Chi you might want to think again. I understand Chi system would be more towards his style but he is no way a top 6 dman for that team.

A little but its not the worst thing we could have done. They really have to be concerned with Jiggy to try and add a goalie.
Weird that Fasth and Bryz go for 4th rounders yet we pony up a 2nd for Berra. Roy and Allaire must see something in him and probably will resign him if thats the case - DDM-Coga
Fasth signed at 2.9 million and older that Berra. Berra comes cheap, has shown signs of brilliance, just lacks consistency. If anyone can help him reach his potential it will be Roy and Allaire. If Berra's agent is on the ball this guy could test free agency and probably get paid. He is positively a potential starter. |

All I can say if he can't make it in Chicago he may as well go home and be the best dman in the SEL. HIs offensive is off the charts even though he has not produced anything. Very good acquisition by the Hawks, boom or bust type of player. |

Fasth has a known track record and I wouldn want a 3m back up for the Avs. Berra probably will sign a 2 year 3million contract and can easily intrease his worth by having Allaire and Roy work with him.
Flames fans have been so negetive on him, either the think hes trash or a great goalie in the makng. I think he has potential to mold |

Surprised the Flames traded him but Ortio is a great prospect. Personally I would have kept Berra and moved Ramo. |

I agree, Barker had more size and a little more abrasive. But Barker had great skill but could not make it work in the nhl, just like Rundblad. Barker was derailed by injuries every time he got on track.
The one thing I like about your Avs is Sakic and Roy. What a winning combination!
You gotta have emotion and Roy is wired all the time and has a desire to win just like me, lol. I know the personality very well and it gets wins, but does not alway win popularity contests. Then Sakic on the otherhand cool, calm and industrious. Great combo.
Already is and will be one of the most exciting teams for some time. |

They have made great moves since takig over. Taking MacKinnon over Jones, Trading for Tanguay, Trading for Talbot (who apparently has more points than downie since the trade?) I trust their pick up in Berra. Seems like they will get both Stastny and O Reilly resigned too. Havent made many mistakes yet |

I will tell you this from watching Fasth many times. If he can stay healthy and beat that mysterious swelling in the leg problem he will likely be the #1 in Edmonton stealing it from Scrivens. He is terrific and I had to agree with the Ducks extending him for two years with an annual 2.9 salary. He was that good before he got hurt. |

I like Fasth too, I think he has starter potential. But as I see it, I want a true starter and true back up for the Avs. This is Varlys net and he has earned it, last think is I want goalie drama and mess with the guys coconut, hes a sensitive little guy |

I totally agree and that is why a seasoned established back up could be the best choice. Giggy if playing well is perfect. I really believe that Berra could get too good in a short while and want to be a starter. ie Schneider/Luongo Berra when he is on top of his game is capable of shutting teams out with 40 save peformances. At the same time he can give up 3 goals on his first 7 shots. That is where Roy comes in. I think he can teach him consistency as the talent is there. |

Hopefully if it all works out, is that they build Berra up in a year or 2 and can see him off high, and by that time one of our goalie prospects down on the Farm, Sami or Pickard are ready for back up duties. Would be the perfect sitaution. By time and gain more on the intital 2nd round investment. |

And a meddling owner to make him look bad Rumours that he had the same/similar deals in place wit Florida or Toronto last year, but owners didn't want to eat any money of the contract. He wanted to do the deal and keep Schneider. And now we're in this mess thanks to Mr.Aquilini. Also rumours of Gillis potentially stepping down after this year or the next season, I don't think that's a coincidence. He's gonna get the heat for all of this from the majority of fans and media for moves that he was forced into making. |

yeah it sucks that this has blown up in such a terrible way, kind of reminds me of Snow and Wang for the Islanders, or Pergula(sp) in buffalo. When the owner wants to play hockey GM, shat alwats hits the fan. You hire these guys to run your hockey ops for a reason. Cant be fans and business men at the same time.
DO you rather want the Canucks to blow it up and start from scratch by moving Kelser, Edler and build a new culture? OR just try and reshuffle the deck and try and keep this thign going? |

Wang and Snow are both insane though, possibly like the Oilers and their ownership meddling constantly.
All Pegula has done is allowed the team to spend and supported the franchise and area. He is an A+ owner, it was Darcy who went out and threw too much money to FA's and put the team in that spot. |

Hes a passionate owner, but not sure of the sitautions too much, dont know if he was goign crazy trying to add those players or he gave Darcy free range and he just made some bad calls trying to impress him. |

I was at first raging when i saw that this goalie they got was a 27 year old rookie with almost a 3.00 gaa, and a sub .900 save percentage. When i read some more into it i realized that if Francois Allaire really had this kid at the top of his list of goalies that he wants to work with then you can not count him out yet. Also viewing this highlight video of him shows me that the kid does in fact have some potential. video is embeded here if you want to see it http://avsblogz.blogspot....-deadline-has-passed.html
I am also Very excited about the 20 year old d man that we signed. seems like he has some potential that is for sure.

I think after years of being on an internal limit the GM just went overboard a little. Fantastic owner though |
