Nice job Canada. Bringing us down
That'll make things interesting though for the Flyers, unfortunately. I think it was Marc who posted here with a lowdown of what needed to be done/what players needed re-signed etc and by the end of the day, the ballpark cap space was about 6 mil for a dman and backup goalie.
Now it'll be 3ish. Meh. - Giroux_Is_God

I have a degree in entrepreneurship and have taken several economics classes (almost enough to minor in it). I understand how the market works. I agree with what you're saying. This isn't the real world though. This is the NHL and they aren't going to EVER contract. Using those restraints, determining the best course of action can differ. - PhillySportsGuy
And it's not just the weaker, "poorer" franchises, they all get money from tax payers, either to build their stadiums and/or to stay in the town, county, what have you.

It has nothing to do with helping or not helping the Flyers. - MJL
I know. Why do you take what I say out of context? I'm saying they should have a stipulation that excludes career ending injuries like a concussion. |

Agreed. That's stupid, but I doubt you make distinctions or acknowledge all the good things unions have done. |

There should be a clause for catastrophic injuries. A career ending concussion can occur to any player at any moment.
Pronger was playing at an all star level when he got injured. Its not like his injury and cap removal would have helped the Flyers. - PhillySportsGuy
Exactly -- just because the NHL has a CBA and rules doesn't mean that those two things are working well. That's why we have had multiple lockouts -- at one time, the owners thought giving the players a 58-42 split was a good idea.
A catastrophic injury clause would address the issue and not open up some hypothetical can of worms that the league couldn't close -- Chris Pronger nearly lost a freaking eye! Marc Savard sits in the freaking dark for 15 hours a day!
The NHL shouldn't make those players go through any more than they have to to collect the money they are due, and the clubs aren't trying to do anything other than move on.

Because of the weakness in the Canadian dollar right now, the cap is actually expected to go up to about 68.5 million now, instead of 71. - JAKEw1234
Just looking at FA for a bit of fun.
Like the idea of Ott replacing Rinaldo, assuming Laughton takes Downie's spot.
Other intriguing names:
Dan Boyle/Tallinder (if its a 1 year contract)
Gaborik
Pitkanen
Quincey
Hainsey
Fiddler
My dark-horse pick up, depending on the cost. Is Radim Vrbata.

Nope. I'm not in favor of carrying weaker teams, but the wealthy teams, when complaining about this, want to have their cake and eat it, too. |

Ott will be pricey. He's like a Gaustad. The king of 4th liners. I'd stay away from him. They have Laughton coming in next season and Raffl is playing well at center now.
I wouldn't mind finding a replacement for Rinaldo. A player who offers more than the occasional good check and undisciplined penalty. |

I don't know that Pitkanen's going to play again -- I read that his heel injury is just like Pat Peake's, which ended his career in the 90s.
Broken heels, for whatever reason, are really difficult to heal properly.

I'm confused - they couldn't set it up like the compliance buy-out only with full pay rather than partial?

For worker's as a whole, back in the day; for individuals or smaller groups, unions do good things all the time. But they also suffer from corruption and abuse, just like every other large organization. |

Steve Ott might be a good fit here. He'd be a bit expensive for a 4th liner, though. |

They could, but they won't. The League already lost a bunch of money to the players on that deal. |
