Smart move to anoint him the Captain now; they need move past all the Marty drama. - BoomGoesTheCoburn
I'll tell you what: Those boys are JACKED UP tonight. Looks like they took it personally, that St. Louis wanted to leave.
I'm watching because I was curious about what they were going to do with Ryan Callahan; he's on the second line with Valteri Filppula as his center.
One other thing: Buffalo isn't very talented, but damn, those boys play hard |

They are probably the least heralded team in the Eastern playoff race. Cooper has done a dynamite job, and has them playing inspired hockey - as evidenced by their noticeable LACK of regression after Stamkos went down.
Definitely my Dark Horse. Not a team you want to face in the 1st round. |

Agreed -- they're too skilled to be messing around with, and they're fast too

I dunno... still feel like nobody outside of that room knows the real story behind the situation... it's been like a huge game of dramatic mad libs. The pissed off about Sochi narrative just seems too trite and one-dimensional to be the whole tale.
With that said, I'm sure plenty of his former mates still have his back... Judging from the conspicuous lack of bridge burning from their end. |

Understood -- certainly, Stamkos said some really nice things, and I don't doubt you're correct in what you said.
They just seem really fired up...that being said, Tyler Myers scored a REALLY NICE goal for the Sabres.
Buffalo...they're bad. They are.
But if they hit on some of those million picks they have...man. If Zadorov and Ristolainen pan out...they could come quick

If the Islanders defer the pick given up in the Vanek deal, which they most likely will - the Sabres could have THREE first round picks in 2015. Hello, Connor McDavid. |

Not to mention a likely 1st overall pick in 2014. Yeah, Ekblad and McDavid would do wonders for that franchise. |

Their prospect pool will be absurd in the upcoming years. And who knows what they'll get if they decide to continue the reset by trading Myers and Ehrhoff. |

Ehroff sure but Myers might be worth holding onto |

Ryan Johansen is really having a breakout year.
It would be nice if Chicago could do the Flyers a solid tonight. |

Yeah, I would definitely hold onto Myers - as he is young and promising, and fits nicely into their current rebuild model. But it's Buffalo, so you never really know.
The smart play seems to be dangling Ehrhoff in the offseason, and snagging more picks and prospects - while building around a guy like Myers. |

What you guys are saying is why I don't exactly want the Flyers burning too many picks over the next few years, especially in lateral moves (though, again, if MacDonald helps bring out the best in Luke Schenn, then yeah, a second-round pick and cash is worth that).
But the Flyers, as good as they look some nights...at some point, when both teams are playing hard and are well-coached, then yeah, sometimes it does come down to straight-up talent.
The Flyers have good talent. But let's be honest: We kinda need to get Scott Hartnell's L1 successor into the system PDQ, or at worst, somebody for L2 to develop, for Vinny.
I don't know about the ceiling for guys like Petr Straka and Taylor Leier, guys like that. And I certainly hope for the best. I'm not painting "doom and gloom," because we're not old in the forward ranks.
But at some point, we have to inject the kind of talent that can help hold off some of the teams that will be coming. I'm glad the Pens haven't been drafting particularly well, and the Bruins have been burning picks in trying to get another Cup before Chara goes. The Rags certainly burned a couple of picks yesterday in acquiring a 38-year-old, but Derek Stepan and Derick Brassard and Chris Kreider and J.T. Miller are good players. At least the Devils don't look like they're positioned to come hard.
But Tampa's good already, and now they've got more picks from the Rags. Buffalo's got a billion picks. Florida should be better than they are, and their owner says they're going to spend. Columbus is relatively young -- Ryan Johansen might be a beast in the making. If Kuznetsov lives up to his rep, then Washington just injected an impact forward into their lineup...
I guess what I'm saying is that I love when the Flyers are doing what they're doing right now: Winning hockey games. Looking strong.
But we do need our prospect pool to get a little deeper, and it would be really, really nice of two of Ghost, Hagg, Morin and Alt can really come in and get the job done.
We might need them to, TBH, just to make sure we hold our spot, if not improve our chances. |

Was just talking to a friend today about the trade deadline moves. Mentioned what the Flyers did, giving a 2nd/3rd for Macdonald.
The response I got back, was "Ohh yeah, the Avs got Stastny in the second round". Just something to think about in regards to the value of picks. Got me thinking a bit anyway. |

Prospects are nice but you need productive veterans in the room and on the ice. Buffalo could end up like Edmonton in that veterans don't want to sign there, although not as bad as in Edmonton, and they spin their wheels with young players for years. |

Guys....stat of the day:
From 1980-81 to 2000-2001, I'm going to list the winners of the Art Ross Trophy.
Ready?
Gretzky, Lemieux, and Jagr
Gretzky won it 10 frickin times, Lemieux 6 times, and Jagr 5 times.
At one point, Gretzky had won it 10 times out of 14 possible seasons ('80-81 to '93-94), with the other 4 going to Lemieux..... In those 14 seasons, 2 players won it. Then Jagr happened, and from '94-95 to '00-01, he won it 5 times out of 7, with the other 2 going to Lemieux.
21 titles juggled between the same 3 players.
That's just (frank)ing unreal. |
