Well that's a relief. His night job seems like it can get awfully frustrating.

I mean for 35+ and retiring. I don't understand why they can't just let Pronger retire with some dignity instead of dragging this thing out for years.
- PhillySportsGuy

Pronger is free to retire at any time. But why would he? I'm sure he's sulking in his loss of dignity while collecting 7M this year! Although I think he's earning it with his health issues.

For his last two 'seasons', he will be making very little (relativity). Yet, the team will still hope he doesn't retire so they can place him on LTIR.

Correct, or the Flyers would face 35+ issues.

He should have the choice to retire without hurting the team if he chooses. Also, he's not making 7M every year. He'd actually (likely) be making more in the last 2 years of his deal if he retired and became a coach.

He wouldn't retire till his salary dropped down to $575,000 anyway. Not if he had any sense. So he'd still be on the books this season and the next one.

Marc Savard hasn't retired and he wasn't signed to a 35+ deal. But it obviously makes more sense for him to keep getting his regular salary from the Bruins than retire and give up that money or deal with getting it through insurance.

Can't happen that way. Then teams would be paying and signing players to contracts that would pay them boatloads of money outside of the system. And skewing the players share. It's what the salary cap is all about and why there was a lockout.

I know, but what happens when pronger reaches the last two years? He should be able to retire without hurting the team.

The stupidity of the LTIR two-step the Flyers (and other teams) have to do with Pronger, who is obviously never coming back, is beyond question.

Insurance is very likely paying Savard (and other injured players) anyway.

I hope this doesn't come of the wrong way. But if the Cap is understood and why these rules are in place, it's not idiotic at all.

Very possibly. An NHL team is only required to insure it's top 5 contracts.
