The issue is the falling value of the Canadian dollar. The contracts and are in US dollars, which means that the new Canadian TV deal and any increased revenues from the Canadian teams will be less than anticipated. - mohel
So if the cap is 68 million next year the Hawks have 2 mil to spend on 5 players. If they make the deal JJ lays out then they will have an extra spot to fill. But JJ did say another player would come back so it would have to be a good cheap defenseman.Kesler at 5mil is 300,000 over what we give up.Happy Kane, holes and cap hell is what I see.But we have won 2 cups without a #2 cente, why not without a #4 and #5 D as well as Shaw. |

That's apparently not set in stone: Dean Lombardi - LAK GM - said he was told that because of the falling Canadian dollar, it could be as low as $68MM. (NBC Sporys). |

I care.
I get the spectacle and the attraction to the whole pond hockey routine the league is trying to sell. However, these outdoor games are not real games in my opinion. If you take the Soldier Field game for example, with all the snow that slowed the game way down and visibility was crap, how can you count it as a real game?
I think the Winter Classic is more than enough of a dog and pony show for the league. Really, I'd be just fine with two Winter Classic games on January 1st - one in the East, and one in the West with one played during the day and one at night. That's all it needs to be.
The more Stadium Series games played, the less interest the league will have from people in general about outdoor games, and Bettman will kill that cash cow. - EKolb13
Great post EK...it was nice to avenge the '09 letdown, but i don't want to watch games in that setting; not on television or especially live sitting in that crud. |

NJD at Detroit: 7 second period goals - NJ 3 in 2 1/2 minutes, Detroit then 3 in about 4. |

But it's not aimed at us - they don't market anything to us - they don't have to, we're sold from day one.
But my friend - not a hockey fan - LOVED the Soldier Field game - thought it was "cool" to see them playing thru the snow.
That's who they're going after - and that's why the outdoor games will continue - especially where there's a chance for bad weather. |

If they do 6 outdoor games EVERY year, wont it kind of lose its coolness? - BlazinMike
As long as NBC agrees to give different team the spotlight they will keep selling out for awhile.
Blue Jackets fall on a class hike 6-1.

I certainly don't take it for granted. He doesn't have the physical skills of a third pairing d-man, but he certainly has the effect on the game. Do you really think a team giving Nick Leddy 20 minutes a game against top players has a shot at a cup? - rollpards19
He's 22 and that can't be discounted and he can play at high level comparatively for a long time.
It depends on the team and how minutes are spread out.
He would be coveted because he skates as close to Paul Coffey as I have seen and that alone makes him very tradable.

But you'd be starting from a lower base: 68 + X < 71 + X.
If the looney comes back - fine; if not - trouble.
Even next year: Hawks have a cap hit of $66MM for 18 signed players - big difference between $5MM left and 2MM left. - StLBravesFan
It's still an increase of 5-6 mill per season...my guess.
In the last 7-8 years the NHL has greatly benefited from a rise in oil/Can $ and a sliding US dollar.
Now many of the best teams are in the US and draw well with high tix prices.
Blue Jackets fall on a class hike 6-1.

I don't see how the increase after next season won't be at least as much as this year....But I'm thinking there will be another 4-6 outdoor games.

Just based on the true measure of inflation running at 10% I would think this is the minimum increase per year. Factor in growth of the sport and maybe the cap can increase 20% |

Ok - two sets:
2014-15 cap = $71MM + 5 = $76MM (in 2015-16) = plenty of room for Kane and Toews
2014-15 cap = $68MM + 5 =$ 73MM (in 2015-16) = not so much

With all due respect, I think if you went to the game last week you would be singing a different tune.
I will no doubt remember that game for the rest of my life - something I can't say for 95% of the regular season and playoff games I have attended indoors over the last several years. It was a great experience for the fans and players alike, and worth every penny IMO.
Edit: Am I the only from this board who went to the game?
I do agree with you that there should only be a select number of outdoor games every year (4 or 5 tops - mix up the locations) to keep it special and interesting. |

Kane was picked up by Buffalo on the waiver wire. That bum Toes got shipped to the Swiss League. Peter Regin signed to an 8 year extension.
