So the flyers need to acquire some sort of body clearing 3rd line winger that will not take "2 minutes for wearing orange penalties" to replace Downie. I think this kind benefits from a space clearer.
Raffl moved up to second line and something needs to be done about lecavalier. And we need another fourth liner. And obviously some defense.
I still would love to see Matt moulson in Orange this off season. Just move Hartnell or Simmonds down. - FlyersSteve118
I'm fine with Raffl on the third or fourth line. Right now he's playing much better than Downie. Berube is probably worried about playing Downie on a line with Rinaldo because that is a recipe for a ton of penalties. There should be a forward pushing Downie to keep his spot in the lineup. Having a 3 minute a game goon up in the pressbox doesn't exactly put any pressure on Downie. |

Unless the Flyers are willing to expend more cap assets for a 13th forward, then they should, having a veteran capable of pushing a top 9 forward for ice time, in that role is not feasible. And you certainly don't want a kid sitting as a healthy scratch. Rosehill is fine as a 13th forward.

What specific versatile depth forward that was traded at the deadline should the Flyers have acquired? And calling Rosehill useless is simply an opinion. I don't think the Flyers should be carrying more then one extra forward.
Not many teams have an extra forward that is going to push a top 9 forward for icetime. - MJL
While expensive for a 4th line rental, I thought the Pens acquisitions are nice players. Goc and Stempniak would be ideal as depth players. |

I'm more concerned with our 11th and 12th forwards. The 4th line without Raffl is a matchup nightmare for the Flyers. |

Did the Pens add them to play on the 4th line? And they gave up two 3rd round picks and a 5th for those players. I wouldn't do that for a 4th line rental.

Offense is not a problem with this team and unless you are getting a Corey Perry or Stamkos then I don't see a need for a pure sniper with G and Jake..
Having Downie in vs Rosehill changes what in the final outcome since 3 goals were horrible defensive breakdowns.
On the non-goal call you can clearly hear the far ref blow the whistle before the near ref signals it in. Tough break and I wish the far ref doesn't make that call. - opeth_pa
as it was happening i was on the phone with the sound off and thought the whistle had been blown just because the puck looked covered. then i saw the ref pointing at the net and the other one skate in waving it off. it was disappointing but if was the other way around i think i want the whistle when the puck is tied up there for that long |

Can't have a younger player sitting in the press box, yet Erik Gustafsson is constantly a yo-yo in and out of the lineup.
And of course acquiring players like Stempniak and Goc are worthless adds. That Shero really is clueless. It's much better to throw picks away for players like Pavel Kubina. |

I know. Those are nice players though.
For this offseason, I would be fine with the team re-signing Mac and signing an above average 4th liner. Then being active in the trade market and only making a trade thats right for the team long term. |

Do you agree with Gustafsson not playing and sitting in the press box? I don't like it and I don't think it's good for the player. But he's caught up in a numbers game. So let's do it for another young player. And stating that Stempniak and Goc are worthless adds was never said. And the situation that Pittsburgh is in, is far different then the Flyers are. And Kubina is an excellent example of why I don't agree that the Flyers should have given up draft picks for playoff rentals this year. The Kubina example reinforces my opinion.
Not to mention that taking on more cap costs puts the Flyers further at risk of cap bonus overage penalties on next years Cap. All of the factors need to be considered when criticizing the GM and what he did or did not do. Rather then criticizing the GM simply based on not liking Jay Rosehill as a player.
What it comes down to is criticize the GM when he trades for a playoff rental and it doesn't work out. And then state that he shouldn't be trading the future away. Then when he doesn't trade for a playoff rental, criticize him for not doing so. What it basically comes down to is criticizing the GM for anything and everything. |

Adding Matt Moulson next year would make it very difficult for the Flyers to improve the real need on the team. Which is upgrading the defense.
I think Raffl is a sure bet to play on the 3rd line next Season. - MJL
I agree. Moulson would be nice to have, but I think he will want 6 x 6. |

He did. I didn't understand that. No GM is perfect.
When you make a trade like the James Neal trade, that gives you lots of leeway. |

Most of Homer's trades have worked out. He's made some mistakes, but I'd say he's better than 50% on his trades. |

He's made some good deals, and some bad deals. The thing is, the JVR/L. Schenn deal is probably going to be his defining moment as the Flyers GM |

Does the trade that Holmgren made for a quality defenseman in MacDonald buy him any leeway? Holmgren got a younger defenseman in his prime cheaper then for what Shero paid for an older and less valuable Murray last Season.

I would say that the Carter/Richards deals are far more likely to be his defining moment as a GM, and where this current team is headed. Not to mention that he's also already built a Cup Finals team. Which is also going to be looked at as a higher moment then the JVR trade. |

I don't think so. It's just the thing people like to harp on most.
I think Homer's been hurt by the 'win now' attitude of the ownership. He's never been given the time to build the defense through the draft. Something that takes up to 5 years. He's been forced to find creative and expensive ways to acquire defenseman. |

It's a fair point. When you have an 80+ year old mettlesome owner it certainly can tie your hands as a GM. It's been a mixed bag with Holmgren. He's done some very good things, and he's missed on some things. I don't think he's a terrible GM, I just feel it's time for Hextall to get a chance. |

So if JVR continues as a 30 goal, first line power forward, and L. Schenn remains a third pair defenseman that isn't a defining moment for Holmgren?
If the JVR/L Schenn trade follows it's dubious projected path, that is much more defining than building a team that lost a Stanley Cup Final by any estimation. |

I just don't think he's to blame for most of whats wrong. You can't make up for losing a guy like Pronger on top of all the assets they gave up for him.
I think his grand plan was to acquire Pronger and give them a chance to win the cup every year with him here. While doing so, he would draft defenseman and build up the system. Once Pronger and Timonen were ready to retire, the young guys would be ready to make an impact.
He did everything he could to get that top flight defenseman short of selling the entire young core. He went after Suter and Weber when they became available. It just didn't work. |

The defining moment was when a playoff team traded its captain and top goal scorer in their prime. |

When things don't work out, someone is ultimately held accountable for it regardless of circumstance. It's unfair sometimes, but that's just the way the things go. |
