I don't think Florida will catch us. The Preds likely will and the Canes have a decent shot.

I'll try very hard to be on my best behaviour. Don't want to be the guy who farts at a funeral - unless maybe it was my own.

Is it just me or did the tailspin all begin with the incident against Calgary? Before that they were hanging in there then that game seemed to nueter the nucks. The losses started when Torts had to sit and they never recovered. If he had just started the Sedin line....

They haven't played good since the LA game they blew their load. They have been trending down since the Boston series, but it was masked by the President Cups in the soft division.

I had a 7th or 8th place finish and a 1st round loss in 4 or 5 games.

That said, no matter how we look like right now, IMO this roster is capable of far more than what we've seen in 2014. The train has gone off the rails in spectacular fashion.

They have done very little to insulate their core since the Boston series. They failed to trade assets for impactful players to put them back into contenders. No 3rd line center since Malholtra's injury is what really stands out to me. They had a long time to address that need and they did nothing. They knew they needed scoring help and they did nothing to address it. Really missed the boat in the last few years...

The only reason I am okay with Gillis sticking around for another year is the clear change in direction. They seem much more focused on developing youth and actually drafting decently. Their 2013 class looks good so far. Now that they have their own farm team the can be in a better position to develop their prospects. See how he fairs next year or even just at the draft. If he can't execute a proper course correction give him the boot and clean house.

And apparently our drafting has always been suspect.

1985 - 4th overall - Jim Sandlak (Dana Murzyn went 5th overall lol)
1988 - 2nd Overall - Linden
1990 - 2nd Overall - Nedved (2014 Olympic hero)
1998 - 4th Overall - Bryan Allen
1999 - 2nd Overall - Sedin -

1989 - 113th Overall - Bure -

I still don't believe that Gillis has ever done anything for the team. He got credit for the team that was drafted by Burke and Nonis. This core has aged and one reason the team is dropping fast is that Gillis and Aquilini have not been able to supplement.

Question: who would make a good GM candidate?

I wasn't expecting much. The Olympics really screws up an NHL season. My 1 prediction was that people would complain about Gillis, and no way did I predict that Torts would lose the room in 100+ days.

I see this position as utterly ridiculous. There is an argument to be made for Gillis inheriting good players but to say he's done nothing is too much. I'm not sure how much you credit you give Burke & Nonuts but there is some credit due.

As for a good GM candidate who knows. I liked the Lafontaine coming in and being president of hockey ops before that ended poorly. Like a Charelli and Neely kind of idea. Not sure of the names but that idea seems the best course of action if Gillis does get canned.

It doesn't matter who the GM is, this team is going nowhere until the current owner makes a decision, is this an serious investment or a hobby?
