I have to give a huge thank you to John Tavares for reaching out to my son Jake. The generosity is appreciated but even more so I appreciate the thought and personal effort. Jake will be wearing his #91 jersey with even greater pride now and for good reason…turns out his hockey hero is a true life hero!

I'm glad a negative event turned into a positive for your son. The positive is I think maybe fans will be more considerate in Winnipeg for opposing teams fans and especially kids. I'm in no way saying there are an abnormal amount of rude ones in Winnipeg that could have happened in ANY arena. There are crappy hockey fans of every team including my own. It'd be nice to think maybe someone who is a bit over zealous at games will think twice next time after this story. Glad it had a nice ending for you and your son and stuff like this only makes us appreciate JT more.

Growing up they were my fav games of the season, I would never miss them, as I have gotten older thou... I have no desire to goto an Isles/rag game the BS overshadows the game itself.

I go to them less frequent now for the same reasons. Growing up I'd go to the Garden, Coliseum, didn't matter and I wouldn't miss one but I have had my share of trouble at them as a kid(or what i consider a kid these days) not going to lie.

JT is all class, great ambassador for the game.

As for the game, its a franking shame a couple knuckleheads ruined a game for an eleven year old who just wanted to watch some hockey.

Seriously, though. As a Winnipegger, but not as a Jets fan, I don't think Winnipeggers are particularly rude to away home fans... Doesn't make this any less of a disgraceful incident, but I think there is a small megadouchebro contingent at the games that makes life difficult for a lot of people... Dunno how different that is from other cities, but I doubt that it's a significant difference.

Winnipeg fans always hold a special place in my heart for their "Crosby's better" chant when Washington was in town.

Through hockey friends, I was once a guest of Glen Sather's for an Isles vs. Ranger game back when he first became their GM. His wife was sitting right behind us and I was introduced to her. Super nice lady. I was speaking with her about the Cup years & playoffs with the Isles. She said the Islander fans were super passionate and the Coliseum was the loudest arena she'd ever been in. I started to apologize in advance for some of the language we would no doubt hear around us(even in great/expensive seats) and she just looked at me and said, "Oh, I've never heard ANYTHING like what comes out of the mouths' of these(Ranger) fans." We shared a laugh. Tho I am sure, you can find equally horrible things being said at ANY sporting event. But I still consider Philly fans(all teams), by far, the absolute rudest group walking the planet. I mean, what other city/team has a JAIL built into their arena....

I was actually at the game that caused them to put that cell and court room in. It was the 49ers versus Eagles no MNF. I actually sat in the 700 level where the worst of it goes on. In the spread of 10 minutes, I saw one guy hog tied by security with those security straps, a guy shot off a flare gun into the crowd, another guy had beer dumped on him and his kid for wearing 49ers stuff.
Brutal group.

That said, it's mellowed a lot with the new arena as they've priced out most of the problem people.

I will say one of the rudest acts I ever saw from a crowd was when Ranger fans jingled their car keys at Flyers players just days after Lindbergh had died in a car accident. Wow.

My favourite part of going to Bills games is the security wears dayglo yellowy-green jackets. So every so often (or all the time vs. the Jets) you'll hear a weird murmur in the crowd, and then you can see yellowy-green blobs running from four corners of the stands to break up fights.

I do find the whole tribalism/security in the anonymity of a crowd thing to be fascinating. My guess is the d-bag in Winnipeg would never think of yelling at a kid on the street (even with 100 beers poured into him). But at a hockey game, hey, he somehow thinks he is doing it to help the Jets win the Stanley Cup.

I just find it incredibly disappointing that the cities and the teams do nothing to stop this. Philadelphia takes great pride in the fact that cars with opposing teams' license plates are vandalized at playoff time.

Why are they proud of acts of cowardly vandalism?

And why doesn't the team or the mayor's office condemn these acts?

Real douches are those who constantly blame a whole city/province/state/country for the acts of a very few people.
