I disagree, I know a lot of people who didn't like the pick then or now...you're generalizing. - LeftCoaster
What? I've seen people post links to tweets/forums(hf, cdc) and the overwhelming consensus was "omg what a steal, I love MG!" when Schroeder was picked and same with Shinkaruk this year. I'll dig em up if you refuse to believe me. |

Yep, didn't like it. - VanHockeyGuy
The only fans I'll believe that didn't like both picks are fans that have a dislike for small players. I'll believe you then, but otherwise every fan was pretty pumped(including myself). |

Gillis' entire 1st rd pick strategy for some years seemed to be: pick the highly rated guy who's fallen down the draft order into your lap. There's often a reason for their fall from grace. - AlexF
Any smaller player I've ever seen be successful, was extremely offensively talented. Despite his draft rankings, Schroeder was never that!
Paul Kariya was, Marty St Louis was and Theo Fleury was....as examples. |

Schroeder (No) Shinkaruk (Yes), although I wish the GM did what he said he would and get bigger. |

He did have 45 points in 35 games in college as an 18 year old. Our AHL development kind of sucks IMO. An overall, this prospect system is still weak and has been for years, it's still bottom 10. With some high/middle picks now likely for a few years in a row, there's no more "they pick late" excuses. |

I doubt you or I know the majority of the fanbase, but the people I know, for the most part, didn't like the pick...including me.

That, to me, is not highend offensive talent. Anyways, I digress, I think they've looked at the way they make their selections and changed for the better. Last years crop has me hopeful, lets see if they can do it two years in a row. |

If all goes well it will be in Bo Ho territory (10) ish |

A player with Schroeder's skillset playing with plug linemates under AV & Torts' systems? Hmmm, I wonder why he's never broken out offensively... Matthias comes here & gets plugged into the 1st PP unit (in an attempt to get him some easy points & make that trade look better than it was)... Thats the kind of opportunity a player like Schroeder needs/would thrive in, but won't get in this organization because we have NO CLUE how to maximize the talent on the roster. |

The Canucks are already 8th-worst in point percentage. 6th worst record is the most realistic outcome if Nashville and Carolina pass us. |

Our man, Mike Gillis. - AlexF
Aquaman doesn't want to buy out Gillis and Torts. There's a simple solution.
1. Fire Torts. Fire Sullivan. Keep Gully as head coach.
2. Relinquish Gillis's duties as a GM. He stays on as President.
3. Gillman takes over as GM.
4. Gillman trades Kesler, Edler, Bieksa and buys out Booth.
5. Team finishes in bottom 3, wins the lottery and drafts McDavid.
6. Fire Gully and Gillman.
7. Hire Gretzky as President and let him choose his GM and Coach.
Done and done.

Totally agree. Schroeder's AHL numbers have bee pretty decent as well. He as a regular for the first time last year and that Raymond-Schroeder-Hansen line had some decent nights(although they'd probably get rocked in the playoffs). Can't be a coincidence that a guy like Schroeder seems to actually have regressed offensively with the more time he's spent in the organization(especially with the big club). They were apparently really telling him to focus on his defensive game in the AHL. |

Awesome. That was his billet mom. I guess he's still not happy with the room and board he received while with the Moose.

Hilarious. We are on pace for setting a franchise record for least goals scored in a season and we're emphasizing fore-checking in practice drills.

Yah, that's the reason.
The simple retort would be: do you think this team would be a cup contender if it had no injuries this season? If he answered yes, send out the Adjustment Bureau to his house. |

Team needs a good PR move. They just said Naslund stepped down from his role with MoDo. Gillis said he loves Nazzy and that he'd make a great executive in the NHL.
If the Canucks bring Naslund into the fold, that's obviously for damage control but nevertheless I'm all for that move. |

Why, just curious? What has he done as an executive to warrant hiring him? I would hope Gillis steps up into the full time President of Hockey Operations and lets Gilman take over the reigns as GM, maybe Naslund as assistant to work under Gilman? |

David McNab ANA assistant GM is who I'd hire as GM if I were FA. Guy has a great eye for young talent(major influence in their drafting and developing which is one of the best systems in the league). Oh, and he's born in Vancouver so I'm sure he'd love to take over. |

What does Gilman know about hockey? If anything the team builder needs to have a forward thinking hockey brain. Gilman should stay a numbers nerd. |

I'm a big fan for this kind of maneuver. Gillis goes to just Team President. A President of Hockey Ops position is created for a well respected, and good hockey thinker to be brought in (Gretzky, Ferraro, Shannahan, Messier , Pat Quinn, one of those types) have a new GM or assistant GM so Gillis's smug condescending interviews don't need to happen anymore.
So, similiar to your line of thinking: Naslund as Assistant GM, Gillman as GM, Gillis to Just President and another person brought in for President of Hockey Ops |
