I'm a big fan for this kind of maneuver. Gillis goes to just Team President. A President of Hockey Ops position is created for a well respected, and good hockey thinker to be brought in (Gretzky, Ferraro, Shannahan, Messier , Pat Quinn, one of those types) have a new GM or assistant GM so Gillis's smug condescending interviews don't need to happen anymore.
So, similiar to your line of thinking: Naslund as Assistant GM, Gillman as GM, Gillis to Just President and another person brought in for President of Hockey Ops - 89_hockey
You guys need to get over the big names as GM/front office guys. Sure, Colorado seems to be doing well with Sakic/Roy, but this team need a legit, proven front office executive with a strong eye for talent to rebuild this team.
I'd take McNab easily over all those guys you listed. Gretzky has tried his hand as a coach and a GM at a high level and failed both times. Messier got passed over in NY for AV, his relationship with Vancouver sucks and if his name wasn't Messier he wouldn't be even close to getting a sniff from anyone as a head coach or GM. Ferraro works for TSN as a analyst, the guy has zero knowledge/experience as a GM a any level from what I'm aware of. Shanahan can just go (frank) himself.

Aquaman doesn't want to buy out Gillis and Torts. There's a simple solution.
1. Fire Torts. Fire Sullivan. Keep Gully as head coach.
2. Relinquish Gillis's duties as a GM. He stays on as President.
3. Gillman takes over as GM.
4. Gillman trades Kesler, Edler, Bieksa and buys out Booth.
5. Team finishes in bottom 3, wins the lottery and drafts McDavid.
6. Fire Gully and Gillman.
7. Hire Gretzky as President and let him choose his GM and Coach.
Done and done. - therealagent

I'm fine with a legit NHL GM being brought in. I would like to still see a Quinn type brought in as an advisory type role. |

Sounds like Gillis wants Naslund back in the organization. - LeftCoaster
He's well versed on giving public addresses on the team choking. We need a guy like that, right now.

Messier was a troll. Hell will freeze over and Booth will skate into it before he works for the Canucks.
Gretzky was the architect of the 2002 team and unfortunately his loyalty to that team cost us in 2006. He thinks the game well. Don't let him call the shots but his perspective would be nice. Ferraro thinks the game really well. He was approached by 2 other teams for management positions already but he won't move his family from Van. Shanahan would give us a good relationship with the league instead of always being franked over! That alone might be worth it. I would not want as as the GM but having them around to help the GM would be good. |

Naslund is a smart guy. He'd be a good advisor. I think Ferraro would be as well. Really smart hockey mind. GM material - no. Not yet at least. He was interviewed by Scotty a couple nights ago and said he'd be very interested in a front office job with the Canucks. He apparently talked to teams in the past but wouldn't relocate.

But these are just generalizations/reputations of a guy like Ferraro having a smart hockey mind. Sure, I'd give him a look as a front office guy to learn the ropes for a a few years but he's not ready. Naslund wasn't exactly successful over in Sweden as a GM from what I read today so no tanks, again if he's willing to come on as one of the assistant front office type to learn and maybe(keyword) get a shot someday then sure.
But if Gillis goes I want a front office guy that's shown to have a good eye for talent in the NHL to build up some young assets for this team to build around. |

David McNab ANA assistant GM is who I'd hire as GM if I were FA. Guy has a great eye for young talent(major influence in their drafting and developing which is one of the best systems in the league). Oh, and he's born in Vancouver so I'm sure he'd love to take over. - Nucker101
Yes that'd be a good one too, I've heard his name mentioned before amongst conversations with friends. |
