Personally, I'd use my eyes. Rather cliche, but it seems like a lot of "away from the puck" stats are too or prone to misleading people. +/- leading the way in that category.

I'd be interested to hear what a few pens fans have to say about Crosby's d game. Probably similar to what we say about G- could be better, but the dude is the machine that drives the team. Can't get TOO mad at him unless there's an obvious lack of effort.

What stands out on camera is usually an exceptionally good or exceptionally bad play. But the comments about Giroux and Flyers fans is probably very apt. The defensive breakdowns and occasional appearances of lack of effort get overlooked because they are the machines that drive their teams.

I don't put much stock into +/- either. Not many pwople versed in the game do. It's funny watching the idiots use it as a concrete stat though like Carchidi did.

I don't think Jake was using it like that though. Pretty sure he was just using it as a jumping point to get some opinions on how Crosby plays away from the puck.

I'm not trying to bite anyone's head off, just illustrating how flawed a stat can be. If I raise a question about a player, and use a stat to describe my question or point of view, then I'd go deeper into the stats to try and see if there was an easy correlation.
