I hear he's the next Lidstrom

We could use a guy like that. We already have Richards 2.0, Richards 3.0 and Bergeron 2.0

Whats that you say, Sutter? done deal!!!!
- nbartley9

I would do Sutter for Downie. At least Sutter isn't a moron. He would be fine playing with Read and Couts.

Well sabers saying they want 2 top line prospects for first overall. Maybe Laughton and morin and our first for ekblad. I would do it.

Good lord I wish we could do that trade, I would give you Gibbons just out of sympathy for taking Sutter.

I think Downie is a good player. I think his emotions get the best of him. If he could control himself and not take penalties, he could be a very effective player. Its not like he does nothing for that line. He works the boards well and wins board battles.

I don't want them to re-sign him because they have enough undisciplined players already, but they can't move him off that line without making the 4th line terrible.

- PhillySportsGuy

Yeah Downie is a very effective player on that line when he tries his hardest to control himself. That headbutt penalty was just an embarrassment yesterday. But the day that he was sick our 3rd line was seriously less effective than when Downie was in the lineup. So he does something right. And Im sure Berube can see it.

When he is playing well he is a nice player. He has some talent but that bit of talent has all but disappeared for some reason. He is the best option they have right now. Hopefully they will continue to add to the organizational depth in the next few years so we have more Raffls and less Downies.
- mickel25

If they can unload Vinny and let Downie walk, they will have a solid top 9 next year. They need help on the 4th line though. They 2 4th line players.

I'd move Downie for Sutter in a Pittsburgh minute, though I'm pretty certain Shero wouldn't.

Whats wrong with Sutter? Was he supposed to score more? I always saw him as a third line checking forward who had a little offense. Are you sure you weren't spoiled with having Staal as a third line center?

Do you think that they will play laughton out of position? I get the feeling that he is not a winger but a career center like schenn and coots. He might be the fourth line center or play in the AHL for a year.

Thats what Im saying. He's a good 'hockey player'. He's just an idiot. I wish he would just go a month without engaging in any bullpoop. Just ignore everything and play hockey. He would be a much better player if he did that.

With the money freed up on the moves above, they would have no problem filling the 4th line with solid role players. That would be nice.

I think he can adapt to wing. He's very smart and plays a gritty style. He can be undisciplined, but I believe he'll be a fan favorite. I see him being similar to Read, but with a little more offensive upside. Not much more, but a little bit more.

Sutter is the weakest hockey player on the planet, when you say checking center you are using that phrase every loosely.

Doubt they would want Morin... he's further away from contributing than the kids they already have. I don't think the Flyers have the pieces to make a trade like that without sacrificing guys from the NHL roster, i.e. Brayden Schenn.

And not sure if Ekblad is even worth all the trouble... he's no Jones.

Thats not possible when the refs are staring him down. I dunno how many times I've seen players fall down when his stick barely touches them. It's like they know the refs are staring Downie down so they just flop to the ground whenever he reaches out his stick.

Quick survey. How many NHL teams have a full time 13th forward that can push a player the level of Steve Downie for playing time?

They always go bargain basement shopping for 4th liners and backup goalies. It drives me crazy. The only reason they spent a little on Emery is because they weren't completely sold on Mason yet.

They may slide him to wing to create a spot for him. Playing wing wouldn't be as demanding on a rookie as playing center so it shouldn't hurt his development. Or maybe a year with the Phantoms would do him a world of good.

We'll see how he plays in camp next year.

That line needs a strength/boards player to be truly effective. Is Laughton that type of player? I haven't seen much of the kid.

He's brought it on himself. You don't get a reputation without being a culprit a lot.

I thought Rinaldo got called for a ton of penalties that were unwarranted during his rookie year. At some point, he stopped complaining and refs began to give him more leeway last season.

Yeah I know. He gets so many penalties for being #9 and wearing orange.
