That would depend on what you're looking for. If you want a stay home physical defensman to play on the PK. You choose Grossmann. If you want more of an all around player, who can chip in offense, then Meszaros. If he can get healthy and get his physical edge back, some team is going to get a solid defenseman next Season.

Theoretically the Flyers have a younger, better Grossmann in L. Schenn. I don't like redundancy on the back end. I think if Grossmann was moved instead of Meszaros, the blueline would have more versatility. I understand why Meszaros was traded, and don't disagree with the premise.

When you watch how he is capable of playing, and how he makes the Flyers defense better. I wonder why it's said he's not worth 5M a year?
- MJL

he is going to get it and I hope he stays here

His best game since the opening weeks of the season. I even saw him helping a little defensively.
- PhillySportsGuy

He's taking the body more, splitting the D on breakaways...he just seems to have found another gear lately, and that's a good thing for the team.

MacDonald is a clear upgrade over Meszaros. Meszaros just wasn't strong enough defensively. If the Flyers can add another top defenseman in the off season, I would be okay with moving Grossmann.

No, I was referring to Mez.

I'm squarely on "Team Kimmo" for next year. And I like that AMac has given them not only one competent blue liner, but two of them, because I think he makes Luke Schenn better.

ohh okay. yeah. no. mez isnt worth 4. total agreement

Agreed, and I'm probably one of those in the minority that likes Grossmann.

Yup. We all know what he can do when healthy, and it looks like he's starting to feel better.

Yeah. He's been hovering around the net more too. I would still like to see him help a little more defensively. He's too eager to get out on the break. He looks like Zherdev sometimes.

His breakaway tonight was great though. He circled back into the defensive zone to make himself available. He then skated hard down the middle and took a great pass from MacDonald. Thats what I love to see.

I agree that MacDonald is an upgrade over Meszaros, but would have been an equally if not bigger upgrade to Grossmann. Grossmann is a physical player, but his lack of mobility impedes his effectiveness. He's forced to take penalties when players go around him, as well as not having much offensive ability. I don't dislike Grossmann at all, guy gives it his all every shift. Can't ask for more than that. He's just a somewhat limited player.

that too, i suppose. it's too bad the back injury derailed him, but it matters not right now, as long as he's getting healthier and more confident in time for when he's needed most.

Hard to chose between this and his backhand top shelf vs CBJ and 100th goal

Grossmann was fine tonight against a very good team. I'd rather have Grossmann then Meszaros. Defense is going to be a key to this team. Grossmann plays some hard minutes, and is a key contributor to the PK. Think about where this team would be without a strong PK with all the penalties it takes? Used properly, with support, he is fine. Meszaros is just too loose in his own end. I hope he's successful in the future and gets his full game back. But the Flyers made the right move in trading him.

Yes. It may have come down to Meszaros simply being the easier player to move. Teams may not have liked the remainder of Grossmann's contract, while Meszaros could be strictly a rental. Not to mention the Flyers are picking up half of Mesz's cap hit.

The Flyers picked up $410K of what was left on Meszaros deal this Season.

So true.....this team doesn't win this game last year....team is maturing and learning how to win....

This...

My take earlier this year was they didn't need big changes, just patience as they had new faces to blend into the lineup along with young, developing players that needed to find that chemistry and confidence to get them to the next level. The team had no cohesiveness and no identity.

You can see how they have forged forward in their progress and are establishing themselves as a rising force to be reckoned with, due in no small part to one Claude Giroux. A young captain who was maligned by many earlier in the season after the slow start, a man who who was told he wasn't good enough for Team Canada, a man who is silencing all doubters with his exceptional display of heart, grit, talent and determination.

At 1-7 who goes out on this kind of limb?

Claude motherfranking Giroux does, bytch!

Being able to back up that kind of statement is quite impressive for a young captain. G is on the road to proving himself to be a worthy leader and has a good supporting cast of emergent young players to fight with him in the pursuit of the ultimate prize. It may not happen this year, but from what I see, it should happen at least once during the G era.
