It's only a study of ES possession as well... and the Flyers are basically holding steady. If you know your team is riding improved PP, PK and goaltending to wins, what's there to get worked up over, right?
I must have missed the part in the article where it claimed to tell the entire story. - Tomahawk
I dont understand why people think we believe these stats are the end all be all. |

Are you serious?
The Caps are 4-0-1 in their last five, with the loss a 2-1 defeat in a shootout.
Yes, they are 5-4-1 in their last 10. Again: A snapshot.
4-0-1...also a snapshot. Which in that case, means "hot." - AllInForFlyers
Yes, I'm serious. They're pretty much even in their last 10 games. 4-0-1 s good in the last 5. So how many PP goals did they score in the last 5 or 10 games?

You must have. The language used in the article clearly points out that the author feels that the stats he provides are definitive and tell the whole story. Not to mention that the article doesn't contain anything other then possession stats.
I'm a big fan of Travis Yost. He wrote some great stuff during the lockout. But he drastically over relies on statistical data in my opinion. And that's one of the problems I have with some of the advanced stats disciples. - MJL
OK, we get it, you don't like stats... you can stop repeating yourself now and let other people talk hockey. |

That is not the case. I have no problem with stats. I don't like the misuse or overuse of stats. Nor am I stopping anyone from talking Hockey.

Because the stance of some is you are either for or against them & not using both together which we know NHL teams themselves to some degree admit they do & now have full time people on staff to assist them with what they see with their own eyes. |

Here we go:
In the last five games:
4-3 win over Vancouver: 1 PP goal
4-2 win over Toronto: 2 PP goals
3-2 win over Anaheim: 2 PP goals
2-1 loss to LA (SO): O PP goals
3-2 win over San Jose (SO): O PP goals
Just a quick glance at those results...kinda gives you the feel that Washington might struggle to score 3 goals in regulation without the use of...the PP.
Which kinda gives you an idea that maybe they do kinda struggle at even strength.
Which was what Yost's chart indicates...and kinda what I interpreted in, like, 15 seconds, based on the fact that I already knew that their PP was lethal.
That's what OB just said -- you use BOTH.

Washington leads the NHL in PP goals. And that's due in part to having the two probably best PP performers in the NHL in Backstrom and Ovechkin. And that can get you in trouble in you over rely on the PP. But Washington has scored 122 5 on 5 goals compared to 129 5 on 5 goals for the Flyers. So if Washington struggles in 5 on 5 play, do the Flyers also?
