Because the stance of some is you are either for or against them & not using both together which we know NHL teams themselves to some degree admit they do & now have full time people on staff to assist them with what they see with their own eyes. - ob18
NHL teams using statistical data, is nothing new. But the question is which analytics do they use, and how.

And we may likely never know but they are used, to deny that is foolish. If you don't agree with them that's fine, it's not a perfect system & may never be.
I don't 100% understand them but that's only because I don't have the time to dedicate for that part. |

That one dimensional overrated Ovechkin has goals 49 & 50 in the first period, as he tap dances on Quick's forehead. |

was back reading and its nothing but advanced stats. ugh....can I end all this corsi and crazy stats stuff? I am a scientist, I have a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and I don't give two poops about your crazy advanced stats. watching the games is all I need to know, observation, purest form or research. - dillpx183
Ok. Now when someone posts something about advanced stats, be sure to move along and discuss something else.
We are not here to argue about them. |

Gabe Desjardins and Eric T. are at the forefront of developing/refining shot-based metrics and have both consulted for NHL franchises, so yeah, the stuff we talk about here has traction in NHL front-offices. |

Who has denied that? And I don't disagree with the stats. I disagree with how they are used, and how much value is given to them at times.

Does scoring PP goals from the same spot make him less one dimensional? He's doing exactly what we said he would. |

Washington leads the NHL in PP goals. And that's due in part to having the two probably best PP performers in the NHL in Backstrom and Ovechkin. And that can get you in trouble in you over rely on the PP. But Washington has scored 122 5 on 5 goals compared to 129 5 on 5 goals for the Flyers. So if Washington struggles in 5 on 5 play, do the Flyers also? - MJL
See, what you're doing there is attempting to get me to use the EXTREMELY limited glance I just took at the Caps and just apply it as a catch-all -- and that's not how it works!
You asked me a question -- and TBH, not only did I answer it, but it gives a pretty clear-cut answer for a limited sample -- and because the answer was a little too clear, now you want to apply it elsewhere?
Why? Because the answer gave a quick snapshot...that indicates that it does give a feel for what a team is doing?

Guys like Ovi are pure winners. The style of drafting quality two-way forwards has never shown to win Cups |

Again: That one-trick pony, with that singular aspect of the game, just might get them into the playoffs...IF it can stay hot.

Wait a second.... he's got 2 goals but his +/- hasn't improved. He's a loser.

I asked you for one reason and one reason only. Because I didn't know, and I thought that you might. I'm not attempting to get you to do anything. I agree that over relying on the PP to score goals can get you in trouble. I just don't know if that's the case with Washington. And I made the simple statement that with both the 5 on 5 goal amount that the Flyers and Caps have scored being pretty similar, if Washington is in trouble because of 5 on 5 play, then aren't the Flyers also? And the sample I provided there is over 72 games.

If he can score 2 PP goals every period, that should be enough to offset his ES play. |

Didn't say you denied it, but you can disagree with how bloggers/writers use them since we don't know to what level team use advanced stats. |
