I wish he was. Carter was the best forward on the ice last night.

The Flyers reverted to some bad habits last night, most notably they were a bit slow on their skates in reacting to the Kings. For 40 minutes it was basically a flashback to earlier this season, when the Flyers looked like they were skating in molasses compared to their opponents.

However, sometimes a loss can be a good thing. Hopefully they'll come out tomorrow night refocused, up on their skates, and take it to the Rangers for a full 60 minutes. They had better, too, because it won't take too many more losses to find they're on the outside looking in.

I think in the position they are in, with the tuff schedule, I would rather have lost the way they did, (incomplete effort) than out-playing a team and still not winning. I think the later is more damaging to a team Psychie. At least they can say, it was our fualt and we can fix this, instead of, man no matter how hard we tried we just couldnt win....

Yeah corsi is just a shots for / shots against measure. To say you can't win a game if you get out shot is stupid, but a majority of the time the winning team has more shots. So who knows. It probably means something at some point, but not always.

I'm sure someone is going to make a stat that combines Shooting%, shots, attempted shots, and scoring chances that is actually significant to saying which teams are superior to others.

- FlyersSteve118

It is relevant. Like any stat, it is more relevant over a long period of time. The Leafs are a good example. By most metrics, they've gotten pretty lucky all season. Its finally catching up to them.

Last night, the possession numbers were heavily in favor of the Kings through two periods. The Flyers managed to bring the numbers all the way back to even.

It just demonstrates how much the Flyers outplayed the Kings in that last period.

I was reading down saying to myself, I am amazed no one has brought up Emery yet....then there it was. Almost as if I conjured it!

If they beat the Rangers it will be huge. They are another high Fenwick Close% team with a very low shooting percentage.
- FlyersSteve118

I hear they're also somewhat good, which can be noticed by watching them play the game and looking at their place in the standings.

I hear advanced stats people literally never watch hockey games.

Yeah. I just look at shot totals and score while watching the games and fast forward through all of the boring parts like the skating and the shooting lol.

Games are boring, unpredictable, and messy; stats are sexy, and will do pretty much whatever you want them to do.

I think to poo poo them as irrelevant is the wrong thing to do. It's one of many tools that can be used to evaluate player talent. I think the person who relies entirely on advanced stats is just as negligent as the person who doesn't rely on them at all.

I hear the stats writers will actually hire plebeian hockey fans to watch the games and do the manual data collection (counting exits, entries, etc.), just so they don't have to get their hands/eyes dirty.

I think that both of the base stats and advanced compliment each other very well. Although both of them have their flaws.

Kimmo and Coburn really made some bad decisions on the play that led to the GWG. We need better than that from the top pairing.

Agreed. I think they were pumped, fell victim to the energy in the building, the momentum of coming back from 2 down, and really thought they were going to score the next goal...so they pushed it. And got burned.

If people would take 2 seconds to understand 'complex' things like statistics, we wouldn't have 50% of the population thinking science is a myth perpetuated by angry scientists who want their jobs to be more relevant.

It is far more than 50% of the population that cannot understand math to the 'complexity' of statistics.

Yes, because no one wants to take the time to read. Its really not that complicated. If you understand hockey, it can be explained very easily.

Half the population isnt smart enough to understand "complex" things like Statistics, thats why we have scientists and expidited food service technicians.

I dont care if you like to look at Stats, or even use them to defend some of your arguements. I'm just tired of the debate of the importance of using stats or watching the games....

Silly scientists and all their peer reviewed research, don't they realize the average dumbass knows better than them?

Using stats as a predictor in sports is pointless (unless you're Vegas) because the game still needs to be played.

Alright. I won't even discuss it with you guys, but you need to accept the fact that advanced stats do matter and people who pay attention to those things will discuss them. Just choose to ignore it if you don't believe in them. I was just pointing out how dominating the 3rd period was for the Flyers based on statistics.

So saying this is a must need win because we are 1 point behind a division opponent is useless? (Those are stats btw.)
