Yes, I get that in trading for the first overall pick you'd have to overpay, which is why I have absolutely zero interest in doing so.
I'm also not sold on Ekblad's potential to be a top ten defenseman in the NHL. He's likely going to be a very good one, but I doubt he's the next Shea Weber or Alex Pietrangelo.
If I'm "overpaying" to trade for an asset, it's going to be a proven one. - Jsaquella
Understood. A proven player would cost substantially more tho. |

He battles a bear when he shaves. That's the part of him that compares most to Shea Weber, his ability to grow a Grizzly Adams facemask in a half hour - Jsaquella
Well, that ability is worth a 2nd round pick, to be honest. |

Just give me Folin, bring back Kimmo on an incentive loaded deal, reup AMac to something reasonable, and see how the kids are in camp. That would be a successful spring/summer to me. - Tomahawk
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you won't be happy with the deal they eventually sign MacDonald to. And I have my doubts that Timonen would accept a deal with performance bonuses in it. But it would be great if he would. |

I don't think he's that good defensively. He can hit but that's about it. As much as I blasted the pick...Morin has really grown on me. He's likely a hit-or-miss guy (as far as return on a #11), but he's very intriguing. I think he's a Coburn-type at least, but the upside is very interesting. - jmatchett383
I think Subban has gotten better defensively. His game has improved in that area IMO.
Morin has grown on me too. Hopefully, he's at least a Coburn with Schenn's mean streak. That would still be a good player. |

I hear he's too intense to photograph. However, a team of leading beard sketch technicians, working pixel by pixel (in randomized order to prevent injury), have created this before and after of Ekblad shaving.

The Flyers traded Joffrey Lupul and Luca Sbisa (2 former 1st round picks), plus two additional number one picks for Chris Pronger.
I'm not willing to consider that for an unproven Ekblad. I might-stress might-consider moving another roster player and the Flyers first rounder for the top pick, but not Couturier, Giroux, Simmonds or Voracek. |

You're right, its impossible to pry those guys away. As it will be to pry ekblad awya if he reaches his potential. Its a high risk high reward situation if you deal for him is all im saying. Whether or not you guys should or what pieces you guys would need to include is mot something I want to really discuss. - rangerdanger94
In most years, I would agree with you. If it were Drew Doughty or Jones, then you're right. But this draft is really pretty weak relative to other years. To me, his designation as "1st overall" isn't indicative of what I perceive as his potential relative to other highly-touted defensemen. Were he in the 08 draft, he's likely #4/5, and last year, he's probably not in the top 5.
I understand that the "#1 pick" thing is a big-ticket item, but you have to look past that. |

Yea, but at least you know what you have. Id rather overpay for a proven player than overpay for an 18 year old. |

You know what's scary, is watching Doughty play, seeing how good he is. And realizing he is only 24. |

It is. That's why I can't trade Couturier for him, it means the end of the dual beards of death |

Like I said, that package for ekblad would be ridiculous. A 1st and a really good player is all you guys should offer. |

This sounds crazy, but the more I watch him play, the more I think he's actually underrated. He may never put up Erik Karlsson numbers, but my God he's flat-out amazing. |

That's the other thing, a guy like Doughty projected to be an elite defenseman prior to his draft class. Ekblad doesn't have Doughty's off the charts rating as a prospect.

That was a hell of a deal. And to think, he was basically a throw-in. That's the scary part. Can only hope the Flyers did the same with Mark Alt. |

Unshackle him from Darryl Sutter and he would post Ray Bourque numbers. |
