They need lots of change this offseason - VANTEL
This as well. If we finish strong the changes that need to be made won't transpire. |

I think they will, they can't be that dense to not see what's happening. Best case would be to make the palyoffs and earn FA some money that he can use to fire Torts. Hows that for inspiration "win me 2 rounds boys and I'll get fired and be out of your life" |

It hurts my head trying to comprehend how much flawed logic there is in the statement above |

Exactly, not good enough to win, not unskilled enough to lose.
From my point of view, if we make the playoffs great, if we finish 9th and pick 10-13th ight but, we still need to move Kesler plus this offseason. |

They don't win enough when they need to in order to make the playoffs. Now they'll win enough to wreck their draft position. Franking Canucks.
I'm happy if they make the playoffs or if they tank. I want none of this in between business. As they have a very poor chance at playoffs I'm on board with #tanknation. When I watch the games though I won't cheer for a loss. |

I'm not on board with tanking myself, not this year at least. I'd rather us push for a playoff spot when you aren't going to be able to get a top 5 pick even if you lose out. You can always parley some players into draft picks if you really need to. With this draft not being all that strong once you get past the top 3 or 5 players in it, you're better off not worrying about draft position unless you're so bad you're guaranteed the first, second or third overall before the lottery balls drop.
Let's face it, no one projects any of this draft class to be real difference makers and able to step into the NHL as an 18 year old, not Reinhart and not even Ekblad (although he may be closer than the rest because of his size and game). You're looking at minimum 2-3 years before they make an impact on the team no matter who they pick. If you don't want to go into a tailspin like the Oilers have, you need to get back NHL-ready prospects for Kesler, Edler and anyone else you trade away.
As some have also said, you want to avoid giving your upcoming stars (like Jensen, Horvat, Shinkaruk, Cassels, etc.) a taste of losing as much as you can. You want them to believe they can and will win every time they step on the ice, instead of wondering if they will, and if they will in spite of themselves. I also think it would help if we cleaned out the management and coaching staff and re-thought what sort of team we want.
To be able to compete in the Western Conference now, we're going to have to get players that can forecheck hard and play that physical style that an Anaheim/San Jose/St. Louis do. It would also help if we had a Joe Pavelski/Logan Couture that can play the minutes that the Sedins had to this year and give them breathing space. |

All the work leading up to that draft was done before Nonis was hired. He was made GM same month as draft and said they stayed the course on the scouting work. Nonis' best draft as a Canuck... he was the GM a couple of weeks...

Great post. I agree with most of what you have said (if not all) and guess this is a wish list/road map to success. Can one of the new kids be our Joe Pavelski or Logan Couture? Gaunce's numbers look okay too, but I haven't seen him play.
What I wonder is if Gillis really has a plan? Are there some expected stumbling points but it is all still unfolding as expected and he is sticking to the plan- the long game?
Not really happy with Torts' system so far, seems like we are less puck possession and more dump and chase. The fore-check looked good earlier in the season but haven't seen it utilized as effectively lately.
Tanknation has me all mixed up inside
I want to run but I can't hide
And however much we try
We can't escape the truth and the fact is
Don't matter what I do
It don't matter what I do
Tanknation is coming for you.
(thanks PW)
