When I do that to my dog he tries to bite my face. In a joking manner, but its still scary as poop.

It absolutely is true. If a player isn't a top offensive producer at the NHL level, he has a much better chance to make it in the NHL if he is a two way player. It's a no brainer.

The AHL is littered with defensively capable guys that don't have the requisite puck skills to make the show.

Chances are better that Akeson gets called up for his skill, but ends up sticking around because he learns to help in other ways (like Clarke MacArthur and Rich Peverley) than a guy like Ben Holmstrom has of earning a call up and sticking.

He's listed as third pairing, but he gets 2nd pairing minutes. He's been good for the team because they lack two-way defenseman. They finally have a guy, other then Timonen, who is solid in both ends of the ice.

I think coburn is decent in both ends

I think he's good in transition and obviously defensively. He struggles with getting shots through and his shot isn't particularly accurate. He's not an above average passer either. He's a solid passer, but nothing special. MacDonald is a guy who isn't great at anything but isn't bad at anything.

A player regardless of what kind of player he is, still has to be good enough to play in the NHL. That's common sense.
You're making my point. If a player that is an offensive player, develops an all around game, his chances of making the NHL are that much better.
And an offensive player that doesn't play well away from the puck, better be a top point prodeucer, or his chances of making it to the NHL full time, aren't that good. Which is probably why the chances for a player like Akeson to make it, arent that good. And it's why they decided to send Akeson to the ECHL a while back, to try and prod him in that direction.

I grew up with no less than 5 large dogs, pure bred, at any given time. By rule of thumb, you never stick your face in any dogs face regardless of how good the dog is etc.

Animal instincts are reflexive. They love you the most they can, but reflexively they may bite you and than feel bad about it.

Same goes for poking them in their weird butt pad area thing. Where their fur is a lighter color. Lesson I learned the hard way.

Defensemen Dion Phaneuf and Carl Gunnarsson were the other Leaks out for the 5-on-3.

Best parts of G's goal were the fact that he wasn't hurt after getting crunched by Gunnarsson and that the pigeon turned it over - didn't hear any Schenn comparisons at that point

I thought last night was more the leafs just being awful rather than the flyers doing anything great. The majority of the game the flyers were playing down to them. To their credit they buttoned it up in the 3rd
