Unrelated, but I find it funny (yet awful) that Vladimir Guerrero signed a 1-day contract to retire as an Angel, and his last major-league act was to throw a pitch that his good friend and former coach Don Baylor broke his leg trying to catch. - jmatchett383
Other than someone breaking their leg I didn't understand any of that...

That's great. Good for him. It's nice to have a good season to build enthusiasm. We're just putting this one behind us.

Quick question for you guys after reading Paul Stewart's blog:
In general, are more parents on the teams you see the tabloid "hockey mom" type (my kid's best, he needs to be on the first line, nothing is ever his fault) or are more parents the rational, composed type? I know that when I played, my dad and my coach treated us like men and made us earn what we had, but there were a few who stood out and were convinced that their kid was a superstar in the making and would chide the kids on the other team. I once shot a puck (roller hockey) at another team's parents because of this. It's a shame I had such a soft slap shot. |

A formerly good baseball playing man signed a 1-day contract to retire with a team he liked.
His last/only act of that contract was the throw out the first pitch.
His friend/former manager agreed to catch said first pitch.
The friend/manager broke his leg attempting to catch said first pitch. |

Most are not "hockey mom".
Simply put: there's always one.

That has been just about every year except this one and the year 4 of M4's teammates were named Pronger or Laperriere.
With so many 12 y/o's (2001 birth year) moving up, I expect to regress to that next season. I did email the commissioner, who also runs the middle school league, to see if M4 could join that next year. He said to ask again in late March/early April as M4 is only eligible if a team in our county needs a player since our town doesn't offer middle school play/doesn't have a team. |

Heh. Pretty much. I have yet to see a teammate's parent do those sorts of things, but I've seen it on other teams M4's played against. |

Well, according to yesterday, the best thing in the world would be that he DIDN'T sign Folin, since he's clearly not any good. |

Big Civil War reenactment guy. He once traded General Sharp to the Confederacy for some foot soldier by the name of Ellison. |

Honestly, I haven't seen it very often on my son's teams. I have experienced one season when our lower level team absorbed an upper Tier team and we moved up as a blend. All the parents and kids were completely split. My son was playing below his level so he excelled moving up and I didn't have any parent to parent problems myself but it went on with the coaches and the kids and the parents were completely overboard. It was so bad we moved teams. There are those parents out there though. We see them on other teams.
If anything, around here it's the people who run the leagues and the teams. They are all so invested and crave money and status for their programs. They don't care about the kids for the most part. You really have to watch out for your kid in these travel Tier I and Tier II programs. Coaches are parents and their kids, their kids friends and parent who become friends with the coaches get all the ice time.
Not to completely vent, so briefly, last season my son was the only 16 yr old on the U16 team. The previous season he played U16 and had 40 goals in 44 games as a forward. Of the 21 kids on the team 14 moved up together with the coaches from Bantam to 16U. The Bantams scored 32 goals as a team the previous year. My son was getting odd shifts on the third line when the season started. He out scored the first two lines in the first 5 league games. We were getting beat so badly he moved back to D to get ice time and keep the puck out of the net. He scored 7 goals all season in what we expected to be a break out year for him. How do you deal with that? |

Just some advice, don't put him in Middle School hockey. It's a circus and not a safe environment for the younger Middle School kids. Jason played in 5th and 6th grade and the best thing we did was get him out of there. Wait until he's in 7th or 8th to do school hockey. |
