All that matters is wins and losses, and he's done a solid job in that department. I was cracking up at the way you spelled his name. |

Honestly, I haven't seen it very often on my son's teams. I have experienced one season when our lower level team absorbed an upper Tier team and we moved up as a blend. All the parents and kids were completely split. My son was playing below his level so he excelled moving up and I didn't have any parent to parent problems myself but it went on with the coaches and the kids and the parents were completely overboard. It was so bad we moved teams. There are those parents out there though. We see them on other teams.
If anything, around here it's the people who run the leagues and the teams. They are all so invested and crave money and status for their programs. They don't care about the kids for the most part. You really have to watch out for your kid in these travel Tier I and Tier II programs. Coaches are parents and their kids, their kids friends and parent who become friends with the coaches get all the ice time.
Not to completely vent, so briefly, last season my son was the only 16 yr old on the U16 team. The previous season he played U16 and had 40 goals in 44 games as a forward. Of the 21 kids on the team 14 moved up together with the coaches from Bantam to 16U. The Bantams scored 32 goals as a team the previous year. My son was getting odd shifts on the third line when the season started. He out scored the first two lines in the first 5 league games. We were getting beat so badly he moved back to D to get ice time and keep the puck out of the net. He scored 7 goals all season in what we expected to be a break out year for him. How do you deal with that? - mayorofangrytown
I guess, as a parent, there is a way to do things. I mean, if you calmly approach the coach outside of the rink in a polite fashion and state your case as, "Not to undermine your authority, but..." do you think that is acceptable? |

I tried that. He was a nice guy but in his mind he knew the team was going to get handled being so young that he was prepping the kids for the next season. That's fine but what about my kid? He won't be here next season. His solution was to give him a crap load of ice time out of position to "teach him the whole game."
The coach for U18 which was my sons coach the previous year and will be next season had a very loud discussion with him without me even knowing it about half way through the season and raised a stink with the guy who runs the program. They're making changes for next season where all the coaches will work as a group. We'll see how that works out.
All it really did was make my kid a cheaper player with some anger issues on the ice playing D. |

Just some advice, don't put him in Middle School hockey. It's a circus and not a safe environment for the younger Middle School kids. Jason played in 5th and 6th grade and the best thing we did was get him out of there. Wait until he's in 7th or 8th to do school hockey. - mayorofangrytown
Duly noted. We'll stick with limited travel, then. |

i don't doubt it. that future waits for myself as well. the only way around it is for me to coach, which i've done, but it was a very long time ago. need to get my usa hockey certification again. |

Yes, there was nothing quite like being an engineering major and watching the business majors at Happy Hour at 3:30pm while you strolled to a 4pm Friday class.

I hate you.
History major: "Man, I have a 25-page paper due at the end of the semester!"
Engineering major: "Man, last night's homework took me 25 pages, and I have to build a fully-functional 4-cylinder compressor by the end of the week." |

I know it's in the past, but wouldn't a better way to prep the kids for next season by "teaching them the whole game?" It's a rough spot, for sure. Did he have any other playing options? |

don't have high hopes. I really want to see Gus avail himself of this opportunity though. He should be getting some minutes. I don't like the idea of him sitting for so long and then having to jump in. This is bad enough and it's only the regular season. - wilsonecho91
Agreed -- it'll be nice for Gus to get some minutes. Maybe he can't play for the Flyers, but he's still young enough where if he makes the most of his minutes, he might be able to find another spot in the league elsewhere |

So....I know that posting fake rumors and/or not naming a source is a bannable offense. Seeing as this is not the case (Ek's blog), am I assuming that these rules do not apply on April 1st of every year? Can a mod confirm? |

That's the bad thing. They OWN your kids once they step on the ice for tryouts. Hell, they think they own your kid when you sign them up for tryouts. We almost had to go to court to get his release from his previous team in Reading.
Overall, we're happy with the program. One yr of iffy coaching at this point isn't a killer. He could easily have moved to Tier I even mid season but I just can't see the expense. It's like 7 grand plus huge travel money. He's two years removed from men's league teams anyhow. |

That's just a poopty place man. But I mean, money (somehow) aside, are there different leagues he could potentially play for? I never played ice hockey but was a damn good roller hockey player. I can say, for a fact, that even the high profile tournaments would sometimes have teams featuring players that we knew weren't on their team a month ago. In fact, there were times when we'd have a guy on our team for a tournament, and then 2 weeks later, we'd be playing against him.
I guess a league is different (based on location like the Mighty Ducks?) but I'd hope there is at least another league out there, or a school program, or an independent program, or something. |

If they win tonight, it will be awesome
and if they lose, I'm blaming Rosehill
as you know, it's ALL Rosehill's fault! - BiggE
Hell I'd say blame could go back to one of Shelley, Carter or Carle. Probably Carter though. |

Depends.
They have a big amount of turnovers: "Turnstile" Carle's fault.
They don't generate any offense: "High and Wide" Carter's fault.
They take too many penalties: "Cote Suite" Shelley's fault. |
