We were talking about tanking in the flames thread, and something just occured to me.

Colorado
08-09 - 69 points - drafted 3rd overall
09-10 - 95 points (playoffs)
10-11 - 68 points - drafted 2nd overall
11-12 - 88 points - 10th in conference i.e. much closer to playoffs
12-13 - 39 points (48gms) - drafted 1st overall
13-14 - 114 point pace (4th in conference)

Why would one more readily accuse Edmonton of tanking than Colorado, who's demonstrated intermittently that they are a playoff-calibre team? If someone believes that Edmonton purposely tanks to secure high draft picks again and again, why wouldn't they believe that this team that nets 90 and 100 points in a season isn't just bopping back to the basement for a new prospect every two years?

For the record, I don't think either is true (neither team is purposely tanking) but if Colorado were to falter hard and draft high again next year, no one would point it out despite the 7 year pattern.

I've mentioned the same thing.

Some guys were talking about Roy for Coach of the year and I asked why? Same with Cooper? They had playoff teams a year ago then tanked for one year. Should we really be surprised they get back to the playoffs?

Also I think the new lotto draft they were talking about would help deter the "one year tank".

In 09-10 we made the playoffs based on Andersons outstanding play. Then the following year we were a good team until Anderson started to turn on us a bit and we traded away since we couldn't agree on a contract

Duchene was the turning point in 2011-12, hurt so much that it really killed the team, they really banked on him and no one stood up to take the reigns as the offence for the team. Varly was hit and miss those 2 seasons under sacco as well, lost the room that year yet they kept him for the following season

It wasnt until really this season that we really came together with Varly coming into his own and EJ being a big stud on the back end.

It hasnt been a fun ride until now thats for sure. Its a weird pattern with this team but I think its finally the kids coming into their own and having a system for once in place. Saccos just dump and chase and hopefully cycle down low really wasnt stumping other coaches

I've thought about this many times... every time I brought it up in a thread it was not considered tanking.

personally I think the Avs regress a bit next season, I cant see them putting up the same points if they dont seriously add to that D Core. Varly being so lights out is helping us overcome that. If he was just average, we would be fighting for our wildcard lives.

Career years from Duchene, OReilly, Landeskog, Johnson, and Varly, plus with Barrie actually looking like a NHL Dman,

Some will have regressed totals next season

I think you'd be hard pressed to really find a true example of tanking. Sometimes teams are just bad, or have bad luck.

We have the market cornered on bad luck (draft lottery being the exception).

Or if you're team like the panthers who can draft or trade well for a decade

Or if you're team name ends with panthers

even they acquired Luongo and kept most of their talent, and huberdeau got injured for a spell.
