yeah, because Burrows has never tried to hurt anyone

Good, glad we are on the same page.

Unless you can prove otherwise.

He's an agitator, but he's never been suspended or hurt anyone.

You can think Im being a homer all you want. But I didnt not see anything dirty about the hit. Considering how much time was left in the game I may say it was unnessacary. But on the other hand I dont want a player on my team that doesn't Play hard each and every time he's on the ice.

Stewy this reminds me very much of when the Flyers' Dave Schultz beat up Ranger defenseman Dale Rolfe in the seventh game of the 1974 Stanley Cup semi finals and nobody from the Rangers did anything. The game and series were lost by the Rangers right there.

Huge assumptions again. Just because he hit him, does not mean he tried to hurt him.

The eye test also shows me the puck was in both of their feet. He's just trying to remove McDonagh from the play.

- Mattjd123

again, eye test. to me, it looks like his only intent was to put mcdonough into next week. no play on the puck or anything of that sort

it was dirty, not illegal. I think it was right he didnt get suspended, was a dirty play the rangers should have made him pay for it in the scrum

well, if you are happy he completely disregarded the puck and went after a player with a vicious hit, despite being down 2 goals with your playoff hopes on fumes, that's entirely your prerogative dude

Please do try and read better.

I said he was dirty, but I'm disagreeing that he tries to hurt people.

Didn't say I was happy.

Please stick to the point. He didn't try and hurt him. That's it.

after awhile no matter how much we defended him, we came to grips that Sean Avery was a doosh

you'll get there someday, it may take some time

Yup. Burrows is a piece. A clutch piece.

Yet, my point, which I'll reiterate, is that he does not try to hurt people.

That's it.

I am so glad he went into that check with his arms and stick in the air, wouldn't have wanted him to hurt himself

Paul Stewart: Burrows Hit on McDonagh: Where Were the Rangers?
- Paul Stewart

What horrible reasoning from a former official. Why was the hit dirty? Just because of the circumstance in the game? Wasn't even a head shot and double team hits happen ALL OF THE TIME.

Burrows is far from an angel(does stupid things like biting/pulling), but not known as a head hunter and happens to play for the Canucks(lets face it, they piss a lot of people off), but by the NHL book this hit is not dirty.

Again, circumstance and reputation are not valid reasons for giving that hit a game ejection and major penalty.

Liked your last blog, but this one was poop. Give your head a shake.

If Burrows doesn't go in hard like that until the buzzer, he's not doing his job.

It was three players going in for a puck and one played the body.

Glad you're no longer a ref.

I'd probably worry about the Flyers of today a little more than digging up fights from 40 years ago. The rate they are going they could miss the playoffs altogether.

BS paul stewart. Burrows isn't "known" for making dirty plays that injure other players. Why do you have to make shiite up??? is it cuz of that thing that happened with guy in the referee fraternity who basically threatened burrows?

I am afraid you are missing the point which has nothing whatever to do with the particular teams that were playing in either case, but to point out that on both occasions (in 2014 and 1974) the Ranger players on ice ignored the code by failing to stand up for a teammate who had been attacked by an opponent. The most effective way to reduce and prevent attacks of this sort even if legal is such self policing by the players themselves. Hockey is a game of physical intimidation, and if one team allows itself to me intimidated by the other one they put themselves at an extreme disadvantage. This is exactly what the Blackhawks failed to do when their captain, Jonathan Toews, was viciously crunched and injured by Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik. Neither Orpik nor any of his teammates were called to account within the code for this transgression and lost both their captain and the game.

Scoop- you & I are totally on the same page here. First thing I thought of after reading Stewy's blog was the Schultz / Rolfe incident. I love the "Broad Street Bullies" documentary that you may be familiar with! I was reminded of the quotes from the Flyers regarding Schultz / Rolfe.

"Davey just hammered him..." Bob Clarke

"Oh my God Almighty! He hit him a number of times & then he grabbed his hair..." - Joe Watson

"He was pummeling him, and not one New York Ranger came to his defense. Now this woulda never happened with a Flyer team. If somebody was getting beat up, watch out!" Gary Dornhoefer

"That kinda showed us that, ya know, wait a minute: these guys aren't gonna stick together or back one another up. I don't think there was a guy on our team that didn't really believe that we were gonna beat them." Bobby Taylor

The point is not to say that the Rangers should have jumped Burrows and beat him to a pulp. Things happen over the course of a season as a team forges its identity that are indicators of how strong a team pulls together and truly plays for one another. Teams that are strongly galvanized greatly improve their chances of playing far above their collective skill level. Just as teams that don't stick together can find themselves greatly under-achieving...
