Again, no matter who they hire as GM might not be better if not worse than Gillis if he doesn't get the authority/autonomy to make the best decisions possible to turn the franchise around. That's more important at this point then anything, and with this move, it smacks of reaction more than having a plan in place. Why now of all times and have a GM ready to go the next day? Why not wait until the end of the season and have an actual hiring process where all available candidates are interviewed? You realize that most of the ones we've discussed that would be great candidates are under contract until the end of the playoffs? If they have someone in mind and are going to announce it tomorrow it's not one of them. - DariusKnight
It's not that I disagree with that comment, but I do think we're overstating the Aquillini influence here. It's true that meddling owners can be annoyingly involved in some key decisions, but to take it to other extreme and assume they're giving executive orders on:
- Every trade negotiation from start to finish
- Every draft pick selected
- Every UFA signing
- Every coach hiring (this one may be true)
then a good portion of the blame still sits with Gillis and a replacement can improve matters.
Whether a GM without full autonomy can ever achieve what they truly want is a different story, but our current situation most definitely can be improved with a more competent GM. |

Did Botch say that this replacement has bought a house here yet? - Nucker101
Apparently his replacement already owns a house here. |

AV had some stacked teams here, look at the numbers those teams put up. The core is older now, look at AV's last season here so IMO AV was a good regular season coach, but bad in the playoffs. Torts' system just isn't good for puck possession and quality scoring chances. AV gets out-coached over a 7 game playoff series, he plays the numbers but doesn't make adjustments.
Rangers could make the ECF because the East sucks after Boston/Pit. Rangers would get bounced in the first round in the west. - Nucker101
Like every team except Boston.... Pits has weak def and Fleury will probably poop the bed again.

Teams that win cups have a core of Canadian players. AV didn't.
When the chips are down, Canadian players want it more. Call me Don Cherry all you want but the stats don't lie.
Towes, Carter, Richards, Doughty, Keith, Seabrook, Crosby.
Their leadership usually comes from Canadians. - Smitty98
Chara. Phaneuf. Nuff said. |

I just don't know why but I just don't have a good feeling about this. I was pretty happy when AV was gone, and even when Luongo was gone. But this move gives me mixed feelings. - Nucker101
I agree. Feels too much like the move is just to get ticket sales back up. Moves like this shouldn't be made to bend to fan pressure. They'd better have a really good replacement ready. |

Despite his denial, all indications point to Trevor Linden being the #1 option to be named Canucks President. |

Agree about the hot seat. Just wondering how much ownership influence there has been?
If Torts' hiring was on ownership decision then who knows how much GMMG is to blame for what played out on the ice.
How tied were Gillis' hands? How much did he tie them? Too many ntc's for sure.
Ownership push for keeping core intact as much as possible? Nix trades?
Ownership responsible for Lou's salary?
He had screwed up of late (Booth, Ballard, Lou & Schnieder) but I wonder if it is a cycle anyway. Just like people like to point out Nonis' fingerprints on the team that made the cup run that we may see similar credit given to MG if some of these recent draft picks pan out. - hillbillydeluxe
Drafting isn't something I would diss on for MG.... But trading... the guy is awful at asset management.

Same John Shannon that said Luongo to leafs was done? I'm convinced that everyone not named LeBrun/Freidman/Mackenzie/Levoie are just making educated guesses.
I'd take Nicholson over Linden as prez. |

Agreed. Just thought I'd throw it in the mix. To be honest, I only really trust MacKenzie. |
