Tonight, I heard him talk about where a player went to high school. By 2018 he'll be giving details of each player's birth. |

I think they were above the AHL. They dominated it in the playoffs against the best teams. - MJL
I was there and saw every home game live, I know how they played. It's still a very short window and the point is any young player can benefit from a little time in the American League from a maturity and professional development perspective. |

I think Ghostibehere probably already has the puck handling and offensive game to play in the NHL. The question is going to be can he handle NHL forwards physically. Or at least hold his own. - MJL
Could he project to be a Ryan McDonough type? |

More like Brian Campbell or a pint-sized Duncan Keith:
Gostisbehere quarterbacks Union's power play; has great vision; a penchant for jaw-dropping, end-to-end rushes; and is a master of the long and accurate pass.
Defensively, despite his size, he's not afraid to mix it up.

Top draft picks should only see AHL time if they're not ready to play in the NHL in my opinion. Carter and Richards were ready for the NHL, and it was the right call in my opinion, for them to start with the Flyers.

I don't know enough about him to say what he'll project to. My knowledge of him as a player is very general, in that he is a small puck moving defenseman.

Mark Streit is more likely, with a side of feisty |

Not sure about that. Detroit has virtually all of their prospects spend some time at the AHL level and since they are arguably the most successful franchise over the last 20 years, it would seem to be a pretty good plan. |

Yes, they won the title in 2005. However, I still think the Detroit model which has basically all prospects spending time in the AHL is the best way to go.
It's not just about their on-ice development, but just as importantly their off-ice development. They need to learn how to handle themselves as pros, deal with the pressure and media, the fans, the $$$. Unless you are drafting a franchise player that is going to immediately step in and make your club significantly better, I would advise all prospects spending at least half a season at the AHL level.

I'm hoping for more than Streit. His mobility is his greatest asset. |

I truly feel it is the best way to go, as well -- you can only make so many mistakes in the NHL, or not produce for only so long.
Some developmental mistakes need to be made in a developmental league, which is what the AHL is supposed to be.
It's not black-and-white, either/or. But I do feel more players who spend an appropriate amount of time in the AHL reach more of their potential than those who go straight into the toughest league in the world.

It's easier said than done. There is no question in my mind Laughton can crack our top 12 next year. Do you want him starting his ELC in the AHL or playing with the Flyers? His small salary will also help a team that likes to spend right up to the cap every year.
I agree with you and would like to have the luxury of guys getting time in the AHL, but you know what they say about best laid plans. |
