There was a massive love in for Torts last fall. Its a case of what have you done for me lately. Even Bieksa stands in front of the cameras and say "Torts wont let us quit". The last game looked like they played to get him fired. - boonerbuck
I don't think you should confuse support for the new coach (that's already been hired) with a drastic change of opinion on the capabilities of his system. Almost everyone to a man on this forum that I can recall were either dead against Torts' hiring last summer when his name was being tossed around or at best luke warm on the idea. Once the guy's already been hired, give him the benefit of the doubt until burned. We did until we got burned. |

Gotta go with losing at this point. With nothing to play for the last thing we want to do is end on a moral high, potentially masking some of our deficiencies (if that's still possible), and with a lesser draft pick. Play the kids, shut er down. |

Exactly, was not a fan of the hiring, gave him a chance, liked what i saw up until December.
What alternative was there, crossing my arms burying my head in the sand? |

Winning .... This team needs to gain a little self respect .... Drafting 6-10 really doesn't matter where you are |

Gillis was getting hammered yesterday for his rounds 2 thru 7 drafting, I kinda enjoyed it.

Guaranteed to New Jersey.
Reilly Smith for Edler would be an awesome return.
Else Spooner and Krug. - AlexF
Pretty sure spooner and krug would get Boston someone a tad bit better than Alex (frank)ing edler |

Frankie Corrado is the only draft past the 1st round with more than 10 NHL games in the past six years, he's played 15.
Young College or UFA player - Tanev 156 games, Lack 41 games (because GMMG traded away our two goaltenders)....that's it? |

The Gillis bashing yesterday was a bit much. The guy did lead the Canucks through their most statistically dominant stretch in history. Was the previous regime partly responsible - yes, was Gillis partly responsible - yes. He was the leader and if we had Milbury you can bet that would never have happened. He had a good hand of cards and he played it well, for the most part, in the first three years. Since the cup final he hasn't done very well. Should he have been fired? I'm on the fence. One more year would have been justified from my point of view. Ultimately his arrogance and inability to connect with fans changed it from a 50/50 decision.
I'll put in a caveat that if he truly was the driving force for hiring torts he should have been fired at the Olympic break and Torts too.
Is Gillis culpable for this years failure and the ultimate failure to win the cup- yes. He had 6 years, which is fair to any GM, and he did not get the job done. From this reason alone there was cause for firing. The blatant disregard for the good things he did is ridiculous though. I hope Linden is the answer to our years of suffering but I will wait and see what he does. |

I've never done a deep dive on his draft record but, yikes, that's a fairly poor record.
And that's not even mentioning the 1st rounders that failed to launch - Patrick White, Schroeder, etc. |

Meh - it's fun to look back, previously I didn't want to, but I reserve the right to change my mind. Truthfully it was just me being putting the blinders on, but who's asking.
Lets talk about how he (frank)ed the team until a new GM is put in place, what else is there to talk about? |

I'd say this is an indictment of the Canucks scouting staff more than Gillis' track record. Since 2001 we have only had 4 players drafted after the first round that have had played any significant games for this franchise: Bieksa (5th rd '01); Edler (3rd rd '04); Hansen (9th rd '04); and Raymond (2nd rd '05).
Now that is scary This needs to change right smartly, our drafting SUCKS! |
