Meh - it's fun to look back, previously I didn't want to, but I reserve the right to change my mind. Truthfully it was just me being putting the blinders on, but who's asking.
Lets talk about how he (frank)ed the team until a new GM is put in place, what else is there to talk about? - LeftCoaster
As Ferraro kept saying yesterday he probably left the team in a worse state than when he took it over. I'd rather see them do things right than try a quick fix. |

I've never done a deep dive on his draft record but, yikes, that's a fairly poor record.
And that's not even mentioning the 1st rounders that failed to launch - Patrick White, Schroeder, etc. - AlexF
Wasn't that no nuts? And his first round picks haven't been horrible. Especially considering where they were taken. |

Okay, how about Edler and Higgins for Spooner and R.Smith? - Chest Rockwell
At this point Higgins might have more value than edler |

A casual fan using a mock draft from the internet as scouting material could've made the same 1st round picks Gillis did. Every pick fell to him. Not sure that he had any unique insight/philosophy. |

What is most peculiar is his year to year change in draft strategy. Small guys with speed and skill, then over age Jr players, then NCAA guys then big players and finally the targeting of the OHL.
Every year there was a different emphasis. |

The major shift was from his early days as GM when he said the Canucks were going with the "Red Wings model" then to the post 2011 "Bruins model." I still wonder about the whole mimicking thing. Just draft good players and develop them well. I know it's easier said than done, but passing on certain players because they don't fit whatever "model" you're trying to replicate is just dumb. Would like to see some changes in the Canucks scouting system here too. |

I'd say this is an indictment of the Canucks scouting staff more than Gillis' track record. Since 2001 we have only had 4 players drafted after the first round that have had played any significant games for this franchise: Bieksa (5th rd '01); Edler (3rd rd '04); Hansen (9th rd '04); and Raymond (2nd rd '05).
Now that is scary This needs to change right smartly, our drafting SUCKS! - Chest Rockwell
Gillis mantra when he came in was scouting and developing, changed the staff very little, they work for him so ultimately it's his fault IMO. |

Yup. He was basically playing draft yahtzee. No clue how to evaluate talent & potential. I really hope Linden cleans house. |

Pretty much, every one of his picks were players that other teams had passed on for one reason or another. |

I thought it was Gillis' first draft but you're right, that was Nonis' last draft.
You wanna see good late drafting have a look at Chicago, Detroit, TB, St Louis, Anaheim, and even SJ. Gillis' 1st rounders, the ones that he actually kept and didn't trade, haven't re-stocked this team with any significant impact. The jury, of course, is still out on the others that haven't been given their cup of coffee yet.
Let's put it this way, there's definitely quite a bit of room for improvement. |

Last year's draft looks good though. We won't know for years whether it actually is or not but it does look good. Read or heard somewhere they went through a ton of historical data looking for any correlations between successful picks and their data. Last year was the first year it was put into place. |

I'd say three to four years before we see the "true" results of that draft. |

You really want to get depressed - check out all the players still on the board after we selected Schroeder and Rodin in the 2009 draft:

Is this good for #tanknation or bad?
Apparently Corrado is going to get PP time and play all 3 games. Even the NCAA free agent is going to get a game. |

Who knows but I do think it's important to give the youngsters maximum ice time when there's nothing left to play for this season. Might provide a better indication, however feint, of what we have on our roster leading up to next season. |

I'll take exception to this statement. This year the Leafs imploded like us!
Sure they may have had an epic collapse last year two but this year we set the standard. |
