Actually I knew it was condescending because now your assuming I'm young but I do remember Van and remember him retiring as well didn't think he was past his prime at all but respected his retirement.. I respect RJ's too but for fans to say he's not good any more pisses me off because he's pretty much the only good thing left in this team right now except for a few young guys.. - bluengold12
RJ has been slipping for the last 3 or 4 years. Just like Van started slipping late in his career. Calm down it's time whether you want to admit it or not. It's a shame neither guys were (or going to be ) able to call a championship for either team |

If you were a Sabres fan in the 80s and 90s, the RJ of today would make you sad. Which I think is what Goose is trying to tell you. Van Miller was one of the best football announcers ever and when he got old he just had seriously lost a step. - Pierceme69
Agreed! |

Nobody is saying he's not good, we're just saying that he should retire BEFORE he's bad. |

Looking ahead to the playoffs, if Colorado beats the Ducks tomorrow St. Louis is going to play Chicago in the first round. We can kiss the Blues 1st rounder good-bye if that happens. |

I was a fan in most of the 90's not old enough for the 80's but I think his best work by and far is actually the 2005-2006 season. His play calling game was unmatched then some of the best play calling in the history of the art form. So its not about age really... |

I wish Pete Weber was still in Buffalo - Pierceme69
Yeah, I like him too. I don't know many of their names. Usually the only other names I know are the guys I don't like (Edwards, Emrick) |

Dude, that was 8 years ago. He was still in his early 60s then. Now he's 71. Haven't you ever known an elderly person? As they age their mental faculties decline. |

Exactly. If he thought that Van didn't need to retire when he did, then that's his opinion, but I thought it was getting difficult to listen to Van. It was just so sad to know that he had been so much better. |

I'm hoping the Ducks win and St. Louis beats Detroit. A Blues/Wild series will be a hell of a lot of fun for Sabres fans. |

Listen, he's 71 and I have on good authority that he drinks A LOT of beer. Do I still love him? Yes. But would I rather see him go out before it gets any worse than it's been lately? Yes. |

What kind of question is that? Not even going to answer it because I'd end up saying something too far...
71 isn't that old don't you know any elderly people??
Paul McCartney is 71 can still play music better than half the hacks out there..
Just saw the Rolling Stones a few years ago.. still play great.. when your getting into your 80's then maybe you start noticing it more but 71 is hardly decrepit |

I've sometimes wondered if he could stick around for color. But honestly, RJ can stay as long as he wants IMO. |

That's one of the reasons they tend to not show him after the first intermission anymore. Look I loved listen to RJ i still enjoy it, it's sad that he is retiring soon but it's for the best IMO. |

It depends on the person. I have a grandfather that's turning 95 this year and he still drives and I'm not concerned about it.
That said, not everyone falls into that same category.

I think he's earned the right to do that, sure. And honestly, I barely notice the announcer for any hockey game these days. I could mute the TV and it wouldn't matter. |

Agree, yes he has lost a step or two. But man, talk about kicking a man when he is down!! |

Lucic is such a friggin punk.. He still hasn't gotten his.. I'd love to just once see him get completely leveled RJ Umburger style if there's one guy in the NHL who deserves it its him |
