He was on their reserve list at the TDL or some balogna like that, so they can play him if they choose
- BulliesPhan87

No, they can't. He was on the list, I believe. But he had to sign before the regular season ended.

I think he can play. if she is signed and was on the reserve list. I don't see why you would want to waste a spot for someone you can't play. I know it will be good for him to practice but i would rather have someone I can use if needed be on the reserve list.
- J35Bacher

He isn't going to be available to play because he didn't sign a contract for this season regardless of any list. The contract as reported is for next season. He signed an ATO to play out the line with the Phantoms. Doing that ended his college eligeability so he can do what he wants. He can fly around the country on the Flyers dime, he can practice with them but he can't play.

Where are you getting this information from?

Unless there are some special rules for drafted college players signed late in the season, and players ELC is not burned off just by signing it. It's burned off by actually playing more then 9 NHL games that it takes.

Memory off of the Chris Kreider situation. When we signed him we knew it burned the year.

Question. I find it funny that so many bloggers and people from other non-playoff and struggling franchises seem to want to comment on how ridiculously bad the AMAC deal is. Don't they have there own issues to deal with?
- J35Bacher

Totally agree with this point. The team was mocked for trading to get Streit.. A lot of Isles fans said they'd be better off without him.. Well for many reasons, including injuries, they didn't come close to making the dance.. and I thought streit was pretty darned good this year..

Then, we acquire AMac, and I listened to Isles fans say he was beyond brutal and I am thinking, wow, he must suck.. since coming over, he's been good IMO, and I don't think it's a bad deal he signed either.. Homer is slowly fixing the D.

Finally, people laugh and talk like the 30 million is my money.. The Flyers have deep pockets, so I for one am ok if we spend the money instead of saving it and spending year after year as a non playoff team.

I think the year of his ELC was burned off because he played like 16 playoff games. Which is more then the 9 allowed before an ELC kicks in.

Wrong again. All it took was 1 game. That 9 game thing is regular season games.

The history of RFA's unsigned in NHL history. Go to capgeek and take a look at the lenghty list of unsigned RFA's. I's not uncommon and it's not a big deal.

I don't know why people are worried about this. I was more worried about ghost

Unless I'm mistaken, he can't practice with the Flyers on an ATO. But I could be wrong about that. I k now he definitely can't play for the Flyers. As you're correct, the ATO is for the Phantoms. And his ELC is for the 14/15 NHL Season.

just saw the mcdonald signing. what do you guys think? i really dont think it can be seen as THAT bad. at the very least, you get the security of knowing that niskanen is going to probably get 6 or more a year from somebody other than the pens.
- stayinthefnnet

I'm fine with it,.... If anything, it will drive the cost up for other coveted dman on the poorer teams and we may be able to get them too..

Its fine.

The Flyers may have overpaid, but they now have some security heading into free agency. I don't love their defense heading into next year (assuming everything stays the same), but it isn't horrible.

Nothing definitive there. All it says is he is "likely". I'm not sure a player singed to an ATO can practice with the team during the playoffs. But I could be wrong.

How can he "likely" practice with the Flyers if he were contractually not allowed to period? Unless they have it totally wrong but I doubt it.

ive thought for a while that you guys were going to get niskanen as well as resigning macd. i thought it was going to be right around 10 per year for the pair. i think i may have undershot myself by around a million. i know nisk says all the right things about the pens, but i dont see how (or why) he would stay there. he can likely get a deal only a mil or so off from letangs in AAV

In his interview on Flyers.nhl.com Ghost talks about that. It was mentioned that Homer stated after his two games with the Phantoms, he will practice with the FLyers.

I don't see it as bad at all. The Flyers locked up a quality defenseman for market value.
- MJL

yeah for sure. i find it extremely hard to believe another team wouldnt have offered him at the very least an identical deal if the flyers hadnt. i know people always want some sort of discount, but it seldom happens. especially with guys who were just acquired as rentals. there really isnt any semblance of loyalty there.

There's really no restrictions on who can practice with the team. They can invite anyone to practice with the club and often bring in players to help with practice. (mostly goalies) The only reason he couldn't practice with the Flyers was if he was trying to maintain his NCAA status and that was blown this afternoon with the Phantoms ATO.

Its market value. Do I like that the market value for a defensemen of his caliber is that high? No, but it is a fair value and what he would receive (if not higher) from being a UFA.

I really hope somebody overpays for Niskanen. I like him as a player but would not pay 6 million plus. The fact that he has suddenly gotten this much better in a contract year always scares me a bit. He might be overachieving right now. Honestly a team that is starved for defense will sign him to 6 million plus. I hope he goes higher than 6 because it will make Holmgren look good haha.

Where do you think he ends up and for what price? Id say Avs for 6.5 Million for 6 years

Mr hat is right that playing 1 game burned a year off his ELC. Pretty sure ghost is ineligible to play because his ELC doesnt start until next year and he only signed an AHL contract for the remainder of this season.

Guadreau burned a year off his ELC for playing that 1 game with the flames a few days ago.
