There were rumors the Flyers offered both Carter and Richards to Columbus for Voracek, Johansson, 1st rounder (8th overall became Couts) and another first rounder which became Ryan Murray. - PhillySportsGuy
that would've been awesome - although I can't complain about Schenn and Simmonds. |

Who knows if the Flyers would've won the cup with Richards and Carter? Maybe they could've.
Anyway, it doesn't change the fact that Carter and Richards produced more during their time with the Flyers than Simmonds and Voracek have so far. Those trades didn't necessarily address your goaltending or defense either, only gave more depth offensively outside of Grossman so far. - rangerdanger94
At the time, the top 4 was Carle-Pronger and Timonen-Coburn and Mez was a very good 5th defenseman. I don't think they planned on losing both Carle and Pronger.
The forwards were Giroux, Hartnell, Briere, Rinaldo, JVR and not much else. At the time, it looked like we needed forwards more than defenseman. |

I'm still not sure trading Richards and Carter was a great deal for you guys. Loaded you up with young talent and prospects, but the Kings won the Cup with those 2 guys being main contributors and you made the SCF with those 2 guys. I guess we have to wait and see if the core youth those deals got you end up taking you to the promise land within the next 5-10 years. - rangerdanger94
People tend to forget that here, Richards and Carter were the guys. In LA on the other hand, they were the OTHER guys. They played a secondary role to Brown and Kopitar. I don't think those two win a cup if they don't go to someone else's team. Think Lebron James going to Wade's Heat. |

At the time you needed space for Bryz too. Thus that deal was made. And I thought it was a good trade and still can be if Schenn and Coutierer reach their potential but right now I'd bet money on Coots and not Schenn. |

By that same token, JvR and Giroux were about to render them 'other guys' here, too, so... |

You're right. But they aren't the lebron in that situation. It's like Wade going to the Cavs instead and they are Wade. even now they still aren't the guys there. They are in the background where Kopitar Doughty and Quick are in the foreground. |

Oh man that's interesting.. I'd be worried to know what this team would look like without simmonds but to get Johansson and that addition first would have been real nice.
If you want to take it a step further, if the LA trade was never made and Brayden isn't a Flyer, does homer still trade for Luke or does he make the JvR for Yandle trade that was rumored? |

I have tempered expectations for Schenn, but he is a 22 year old with a 20 goal, 40 point season under his belt. He's an even player this year and has a positive Corsi when he's not playing with the anchor known as VL.
Couts is already a great defensive player and a beast on the PK. He doesn't shoot the puck enough, but has great hands. I think its only a matter of time before he starts to contribute offensively. He had 39 points without much PP time and matched up against really tough opponents in a lot of defensive situations. |

funny thing about trades like these.....would forsberg, duschene, ricci, hextall et.al. have won the cup here if the lindros trade had not happened? without sakic and roy it seems unlikely.....i really believe trading richards and carter made the flyers better but i hated to see richards go...... |

Yeah. It might be worth driving out and seeing some games. It would help give you an idea of how players are used and how they're playing. I bet CSN could make a quick buck if they televised more of the games. - PhillySportsGuy
Definitely. I'm glad they're moving closer. Plus they might actually have a solid team next season with Leier and maybe Laughton joining the forwards and Ghost, Hagg, and Alt anchoring the defense. I'd love it if CSN televised some games. Would be better entertainment than the Sixers. |

My fear, if they kept bot Richards and Carter is that we would be similiar to Vancouver this year, one finals apparence and an aging core, while the trades hurt at the time esoecially since the KIngs won the cup, they helped us long term. This team is young and improving instead of old and stagnant |

Amazing that with the playoffs getting ready to start, that Richards and Carter are the topic of conversation. It's old and it's the past. This is a new team, ready to take a step. And I can't wait for the anchor known as VL to score some key playoff goals for the Flyers. |

I don't think either are future MVPs, but I do see them reaching 60 points within the next couple years. Couts has a chance to win the Selke at some point. |

the rangers' guy brought it up more as a comment/observation than to start the debate amongst those of us who already hashed it out |
