Also, in relation to blocking shots vs possession stats, when Torts manned the Rag's all they did was block shots, all night long.
So there possession stats waned significantly. - puckhead17
I was always amazed his teams didn't have a poopload of injuries every year. His defenseman's toes must all be crooked. |

Thats why they use it relative to other players on the same team. If one defenseman on the Flyers has a much higher rate of allowing entries than all other defenseman then it means something. - PhillySportsGuy
It does mean something. All it means is what it says. That one has a much higher rate then another. Nothing more, nothing less. It cannot tell you why. That takes context. And that's where the problem's come in. It cannot tell you that one player is better then another. Because the results are not just about that player. As much as they try, they cannot isolate the results of a play on the ice, to one player. |

Not sure if it's been posted don't have time to back read. There were 29 faceoffs in the Flyers zone, compared to 6 in the Rangers zone in last nights game.
That tells the entire story regarding attack time and puck possession.
The really frustrating thing is, the Rangers aren't a particularly good offensive team, and they have sucked at MSG all year. Laviolette, and Tortorella are gone, yet the games between these two teams look exactly the same. |

Man, I so agree with you on this, I know Callahan broke his hand once, but you would think 1/2 the lineup would have been out, the way they played.

the Flyers beat the Rangers a couple of times here ... so they must be capable of doing something right. |

They absolutely look the same.
Not much has changed on the back end for both teams

The mathematical theory is not the problem. It is the application to a team game, and trying to isolate one player, and attribute the results to one player, in a team game, where there are many, many factors. And there's plenty of documentation about this. As much as 40% of the data that goes into Corsi numbers are false negatives, and false positives. The math is fine. The concept, and more importantly, the abuse of the stats, are where the issue is.

So who's confident the Flyers can win game 2? I may be in the minority, but I think they can. |
