i think a penalty has to be earned at all times of the game, but especially in OT

now what do i mean by that?

As the player in possession of the puck if you are being hooked, held, impeded you have to keep your feet moving and do your best to fight through it. If you do i will give you the call

if you just get hooked and give up, or someone holds you and you stop and look at the ref, no call sorry

im sick of all these weak calls early in the game, then make up calls to make up for their crappy call

This....

Solution is to stop giving a hook + an embellishment. Just hand out the embellishment.

the problem with the logic that the refs "decide the game" by calling a penalty is that they are equally "deciding the game" by choosing to ignore said penalty. Choosing not to enforce the rules has just as much impact on the game as enforcing them. Except in reverse. Instead of giving the victimized team an advantage, they give the offending team an advantage by allowing them to play outside of the rule book. It's got the same impact at the end of the day. Just in reverse.

This.

While I understand the upset over the tripping penalty that led to the Habs win, I would have been equally as infuriated had the trip not been called and the turnover that it resulted in turned into a goal.

I think a penalty is a penalty. They should never "put their whistles away", regardless of what kind of game it is, or the time within it. Deciding to "put them away" only leads to outrage when they inevitably decide to call something.

Not that it would have changed the outcome of the series, but the biggest mistake I seen this year was Game 4 of the Tampa vs Montreal series. Watch the play again, Paquette is being sat on in the corner for 5-10 seconds without the puck. A clear interference call but its late in the game and I get the reason for no penalty. However, when Paquette is getting up he trips up the defender and THAT gets called? If your going to let the other player basically sit on Paquette you CAN'T call that a penalty.

What everyone has already said - a penalty is a penalty no matter what part of the game. This 'putting their whistles away' or 'letting them play' is complete BS. Boston seems to be the team most adept at taking advantage of this predictable change in officiating.

There's a difference between embellishment and diving. Embellishment is making a real penalty look worse. Both should be called. Diving is making a non-penalty look like a penalty. This is what is never called, but should be called. It's the only way to get it to stop happening.
