Neither team played really well.
Flyers have some good bursts, Rangers have good chances.
Couturier played a really bad period with two horrible turnovers.
Macdonald and Coburn with some bad plays.
Happy they are up 1-0 but not happy with how they played.

How have they been taking more chances? And they spent a lot of time, far too much time hemmed into their own zone. The breakout execution is again poor, and it doesn't have anything to do with Holmgren. - MJL
they miss passes to wide open guys more than I have ever seen a team do this. all turn into turnovers or icings when it would otherwise be a routine break out and the puck in the rags end |

Remember last game when the linemen were counting the inches to the red line on the dump ins? This game every potential icing is waved off it seems. |

Far too reactionary, conservative and defense minded.
On the plus, I thought Giroux and Raffl had a hell of a period. Much better for Hartnell and Simmonds as well. - flyer_nutter
Well when you turn the puck over as much as they did that period, you have to be defense minded. The game play is not defense minded or conservative. Berube is not a coach that wants to sit back in a conservative defensive posture. I have no idea where that belief comes from.

TSN panel just made fun of the Flyers 1st period turnovers. Aaron Ward: "You might as well play these clips to circus music." |

the energy is there from much of the team, a lot better than what we've seen in much of the rest of the series, but it's misdirected. they create most of their own problems. |

As most have pointed out....our best players have to be our best players......Giroux was the bast player on the ice in the first period....did he lose a face off? But man that 4th line is really atrocious.........c'mon boys it's right there....take it!!!!!! |

I would say the belief comes from the way they played the first five games. I'm not saying they were ultra conservative in the first 5, but definitely more so than the last 20 games of the regular season. |

Really good last shift there by Giroux. Hopefully that continues for the rest of the game. I refuse to be negative. |

Look at the Rangers breakouts. First of all they are under far less pressure then the Flyers are. But they use the whole ice. Flyers don't use the middle of the ice. Every breakout is along the wall, and the Rangers simply jump on it, with the 3rd forward or a pinching defenseman. Need a forward to come back deep and give a center option to the defenseman. If they take the wall away, use the center of the ice.

It was really bad that period.
Even with that they survived so hopefully time to get better. |

It may just be me, but I'd say the most atrocious part of the series has been Comcast's music selection to start each period. |

Not getting into, but you see exactly the faults of Holmgren that period.
The team trying to set the pace and move the puck quickly starting from the back end. Unable to do so.
I don't see how a team assembled by a GM has nothing to do with him. - flyer_nutter
When players don't play well, or have a bad game, it's not the fault of the GM. This has nothing to do with Holmgren. Players have to play.

Its ugly for sure.
They are trying to push the pace, and being exposed in the process. At least though, they are trying to win. First time all series I have seen them really try to take the game by the horns.
If that's what they are, so limited, then so be it. At least try though, and I will give them credit for that. |

I am of the frame of mind that when a GM assembles a team, he is essentially responsible for it.

They are somewhat rattled, and feeling the Rangers speed even when it is not right there. Hence the hurried passes etc. The over-exuberant celebration after goal 1 is revealing. Reminds me of Richard's (I think) first goal against the Pens in 2008 ECF. I don't really remember the actual goal - I remember him 'over-celebrating' though. |
