My memory has been spotty before, but from all my readings of the Flyers, my understanding is that only one instance required permission from above the GM to fire the coach: When they gave the shiv to Bill Barber, during the (reported) infamous player revolt.
Other than that, as far as I've been able to tell, the Flyers GMs have led the way in the hiring, and definitely made the call on the firings - AllInForFlyers
Hmmmm..makes sense, since the GM is in charge of the roster, and should therefore be able to pick the best coach for the roster (or vice versa). |

Depends on the management structure and/or ownership group... pretty sure Linden had to go upstairs to fire Torts. |

Just to reiterate, last night's Vikings season finale was one of my favorite television episodes of forever. |

If what we're reading is true, he did, because they owe him $8 million with no offset, reportedly |

schenn 3.6 mez 4
gross 3.5 streit 5
cheapest pair was 7.6 coming into this season. that is freaking insane. Do you get my point? OUR D COSTS WAY TOO MUCH. - FlyersSteve118
Meszaros is gone, Kimmo is probably gone, Grossmann will hopefully be gone, and we have four young and cheap defensive prospects to look forward to. |

That's pretty messed up. I mean, Family Guy? Really?
Hey Lois, remember the time when I made a nonsequential reference to a past humorous episode? |

Followed promptly by people getting impatient with their learning curve and strong likelihood that their development involved some "backward steps" along the way.

This year is going to be
High Price UFA (Niskanen, Boyle, Markov, Timonen) 6M Coburn 4.5
Mac 5 Schenn 3.6
Streit 5 Grossmann 3.5
Unless we get rid of Schenn or Grossmann, going to pay close to 9 mil a pair. Even if we do get rid of one of them we still invest WAY TOO MUCH cap space into our defense, due completely to our lack of developing young defensemen. |

Yep.
Offseason mantra: "We have a lot of good prospects, let's be patient and build a solid defense."
Preseason mantra: "Morin/Ghost/Hagg look great, he/they should be in our lineup now instead of these overpaid bums!"

I think Niskanen will cost more than $6M. I still want him though. If they sign Niskanen, they would need to trade a defenseman. Likely Grossmann or Schenn. |

And the organization has shown a clear focus on attempting to correct it. Nothing to do about it at the moment.
FWIW, I think one of Alt/Lauridsen will have a good shot at making the lineup this year. So you could have:
Coburn 4.5 Streit 5
Mac 5 Schenn 3.6
Streit 5 Alt/Lauridsen ~$650K
Brings it down to about $7.9M per pair. Not great, but a step. |
