Those teams were young, but had a stud dman or a dman who was developing into a stud.

The Flyers defense may look like this

Mac-Coburn
Grossmann-Streit
Gus/FA/Alt-Schenn

- PhillySportsGuy

I think that either L. Schenn or Grossmann is going to have to go in the off season in order to make room for some signings. The flyers are going to want to get a top line forward and the top defender they need. I think Lecavalier and Grossmann go in the off season and I don't think Timonen resigns. He looked worn down in the playoffs.

So fellas, I don't know if you remember, but long story short, there's a really sweet professor here that everyone loves and she's leaving because the school won't give her a full time position, much to her dismay. Me and my friend started an online petition and got like 200 people to sign it to keep her here. The "process" is now up to the presidential level- the last rung on the ladder! So she might be staying after all!

We went and drank with her after her final yesterday. Literally an hour after the exam. Yes, I can say I drank with my molec professor. If she's back next year, our class is gonna take her to old city

I don't want him on the Flyers just for this reason.

He'd also drop this exact phrase at least once a game: "unique family history"

EDIT: All joking aside, that whole story with Bobby and his dad is wild

- Giroux_Is_God

It is pretty crazy. I'm not even sure he views the Flyers the way most people think. He spent a great deal of his life in Southern California. The Ducks may have, in fact, been his favorite team.

They can't afford a top line player and a top 4 defenseman. It's pretty much one or the other. The options aren't great to begin with in FA.

If Ryan played for the Pens, how many times would Pierre mention that fact during Flyer Pens games?

I'm GiG and I'm quoting this post because it reflects my sentiments almost exactly, and I hadn't gotten around to articulating these thoughts. Also, I'm just too lazy to type it out myself.

If the cap is raised to 71mil and they get rid of grossmann and lecavalier. And timonen doesn't resign, they definitely can afford. It would just mean Gustafsson would have to play a permanent role on the team.

Hello Bill--
Thank you for another great season of blogs.

Quick question--and I wonder if this is something that Timonen or the Flyers' brass has kicked around as an idea/option--

Would Timonen be open to a Scott Neidermayer type "mid-season" deal?

What if we found out half of what Pierre says is just a recording they use to fill time. It would really explain a lot.

I posted this yesterday, but I think this could work very well. The numbers on Moulson and Niskanen might be a little off, but a ballpark 6mil each is around what I think they will both get.

I would definitely be ok with this

The only problem is how do you get rid of Vinny. That's certainly a contingency plan

Cap is likely to be around $69M

If you get a team to take VL and Grossmann without covering any of the salary (Good luck), it will leave you with $56.5M committed to next year. That leaves $12.5M.

Schenn will be 2.5M
Gus will be $1M
Backup goalie $1M
Laughton will be $1M
Akeson will be $1M

That leaves you $6M

You cannot use Pronger's LTIR in the offseason. The Flyers must be cap compliant on the first day of the season. They will be able to "assign Laughton to the Phantoms" which will allow the team to be $1M over the cap if necessary.

Essentially, you have $7M to find a top line winger and top 4 defenseman. Under your scenario, they would have 5 defenseman signed for next season (Including Gus) and 12 forwards (Including Rosehill).

It involves trading Grossmann and Lecavalier for a bag of pucks as long as someone is will to take their full salary. Which I think is very possible, if Gomez got traded.

Yeah Pronger makes it a problem, but isn't there an allowance of a certain percentage? The flyers were up against the cap this offseason and still managed to get it done.

We don't get many NHL players from the area. I think it will get better as time goes on, but every time we do, everyone expects that player to bend over backwards to play for the Flyers.

EVeryone thought Gaudreau would delay entering the NHL so he could sign with the Flyers in 2015.

THey can be 10% over, but I think they need to be cap compliant once the season begins.
