Andrew MacDonald is too passive at the blue line = advanced stats need context.

Straw men for everyone.

- bradleyc4

The straw man is talking about how a defenseman defends zone entries, and pretending that the zone entry stats aren't involved in coming to that conclusion. or talking about a team or a player, in terms of possession, and pretending that Corsi is not involved. When the discussion comes from certain sources, it's a safe bet that it's about advanced stats.
And even more a straw man argument is moving the conversation away from the subject itself, and onto why the stats were brought up.
It's simple, when talking about possession, Corsi goes hand and hand in that. Because that's how possession quantified in the advanced stats community. When talking about defenseman defending against zone entry, the stats become relevant, because that's how it is quantified.
It's like trying to talk about goal scorers, and saying the number of goals they scored isn't part of the conversation.

As you should be.

You know, even though you and I disagree sometimes, I'll defer to your hockey knowledge for the most part. I mean, you won an international gold medal in a full-sanctioned (IIHF?) adult tournament. That makes you more of a hockey expert than anyone else on here, since you actually have an inkling of how things actually work.

Andrew McDonald backs in too often at the blue line, something I have witnessed by watching him.

Refute it.

[Laviolette] is a great hockey mind who not only has a winning resume, but has done it with an aggressive offensive philosophy while also excelling in helping young players reach their potential. We look forward to Peter instilling his culture in Nashville immediately following his duties coaching the United States at the 2014 World Championship.

An opinion is someone stating a preference or a feeling.

I am stating this as an observational evaluation, which is a fact.

i never even brought up stats. i don't know how corsi and fenwick et all (frank)ing works. i know there's some value in them, and the teams all use these metrics in some capacity. that's cool with me, it's just not an area i'm interested in learning about right now. it's kind of like how i ignore a lot of the cba because it all just ruins the game for me. i don't do fantasy hockey for the same reason. i just want to watch hockey and notice what i notice, and maybe break something in the process.

i disagree with everyone on here at some point. it's what makes the board go 'round. i have played hockey for a long, long time, at a reasonably high level and like to think i have a shred of a clue about what i'm watching. i've also done some coaching of teams and goalies so i have a little of that side as well. i'm not a believer of you have to play to understand - but i certainly think the perspective helps in understanding the psychology of players and what really goes on out there.

An observational evaluation can be subject to a lot of things, including bias. Just because someone feels they have observed something, doesn't make it a fact. There is a human element involved.

I can easily say I have observed that MacDonald does not back in too much in the defensive zone, and ask you to refute it. It puts us in the same place, which is no where.

So, are your observations not subject to bias?

Your sieve of a Stanley Cup champion goalie has only played 2 full games of shutout hockey. He's got quite a ways to go the match the immortal Ilya Bryzgalov.
- jmatchett383

hes been big. hasnt had to be spectacular but he has been very consistent. ill take that every day of the week with him. really dont see many spectacular glove saves or great poke checks. hes just in sound position, using methodical movements, and controlling rebounds.

just as vital to his goose eggs have been the performance of one kristopher letang

well, there were two instances of estate problems to be analyzed. i thought the future interests were both subject to it, but it only actually struck the clause in the first one due to the fact that the second instance was between charities and they are typically exempt.

haha. oh back at that huh? i mean i love bantering back and forth about most anything to do with hockey, but jesus. it becomes more about the merits of ideologies than it does player performance by the time you guys are done with it.
