To be fair I have been going over the last four or five years of Flyers drafts, and they have actually had a pretty good run overall.

No it doesn't. Part of the problem is that the fans view of what's an expensive contract, hasn't escalated to the level that players contracts and market value for players has.

Jason Akeson should be a Flyer. He is a gifted player who has proven he can produce at every level and did not look out of place in his early NHL exposure, on a big stage. In every NHL game he's played, Akeson was one of the Flyers best players (the incidental high-stick notwithstanding). He has very good hands, vision and puck control and thinks the game at a high level, allowing him to create good offensive opportunities on a regular basis, despite his average (by NHL standards) skating. From what I can see, his defensive game isn't great, but it's not any worse than many guys already on the Flyers...to his credit, his effort seems strong at both ends. He skates and isn't afraid of the physicality. He may get knocked down at times (like some other players in the league), but he gets right back up and battles effectively...he doesn't look like he's being stifled physically out there...they body up on him but he still produces...he's good at finding/creating space for himself from which to make plays (passes/shots).

If he can continue to show he can contribute offense like that while playing at least like he did against the Rags on the defensive side, he's certainly someone I'd want in my lineup...I pencil him in for next season...I think it should be his spot to lose. I don't know why people continue to discount his chances and not take him seriously. I've been a big believer in the kid since we signed him.

But one thing Hextall said in interviews today, which I agree with, is that young players aren't handed a spot on the team. They have to earn it. He did a good job in the playoffs, and I think all he earned was an opportunity. Coaches have a short leash with players like Akeson. I agree with the general sentiment about nobody's guaranteed a spot...but in regards to Akeson, for me, I think I saw more in his play against the Rags than any training camp/pre-season could possibly show. He looked like he belonged and more than that, he was among the best performers on the team on more than one night of the series. The points he put up weren't some fluke. He made numerous skilled plays that showed off his vision and hands. He made a number of these plays that unfortunately didn't end up as goals, but he made them nonetheless...and I believe he didn't look that bad in his own end.

I believe that if they give him a top six (for the Flyers, really, a top nine) role, he will produce at a significant rate, without being some big liability on D. If somehow he ends up flaming out and sucking, I'm pretty sure he'll sign for cheap so that can be dealt with a number of ways. I don't see the problem.
